National Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo took a tumble during a celebrity sprint race that formed part of the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations held on Tuesday, October 20, at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret City, Uasin Gishu County.
Kiptoo was one of several high-profile figures who lined up for the dash in front of President William Ruto, who presided over the national holiday event.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed attended as chief guest, alongside ranking government officials and diplomats.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Coordination Dennis Itumbi, Youth Affairs Principal Secretary Jacobs Fikirini, and media personality Dr Ofweneke were also among the competitors.
Video footage from the event shows the participants, dressed in red, green and white Kenya-themed kit, warming up on the sidelines of the pitch.
Competitors stretched and bent to touch their toes as a coach in a red Kenya tracksuit moved among them before the field took up crouched sprint positions on the grass, with the packed stands visible in the background.
As the race got under way, the competitors surged forward in a tight group. Kiptoo lost his footing partway through the dash and hit the ground and rolled, but he rose and pushed on to complete the course.
Ofweneke Wins the Race
At the front of the pack, Dr Ofweneke, wearing a white vest, pulled clear of the field and broke the finishing tape with both arms spread wide.
He then walked to the perimeter of the pitch to acknowledge spectators and photographers gathered at the event.
The sprint was one of a number of entertainment features organised for Mashujaa Day, Kenya's annual occasion to honour its heroes and heroines.
