The fastest aircraft flown by the US military include fighters, reconnaissance jets, and experimental rocket planes. Some entered service and flew missions for decades, while others made only a small number of test flights to explore the limits of speed and altitude.
Their designs reflect the different reasons for flying fast, from intercepting enemy bombers to gathering intelligence over defended territory. Reaching those speeds required powerful engines, specialized airframes, and materials capable of withstanding intense heat.
This list ranks 10 of the fastest crewed aircraft flown in US military service or military flight-test programs, including joint research efforts.
1. North American X-15 — 4,520 mph
According to NASA, Air Force pilot William “Pete” Knight reached 4,520 mph in the X-15A-2 on October 3, 1967. The joint NASA–Air Force–Navy program investigated hypersonic flight, placing this rocket-powered research aircraft well ahead of every other entry here.
A modified B-52 carried the X-15 to launch altitude before its rocket engine took over, and the aircraft later returned for an unpowered landing.
For the fastest flight, external propellant tanks extended engine operation, while an ablative coating protected the aircraft against intense aerodynamic heating.
2. Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird — 2,193 mph
The SR-71 turned sustained high-speed flight into an operational reconnaissance capability. On July 28, 1976, a Blackbird established an absolute speed record for its class of approximately 2,193 mph, securing its place among aviation’s most remarkable aircraft.
Its Pratt & Whitney J58 engines were designed to operate above 80,000 feet at speeds exceeding three times the speed of sound.
That performance supported the Blackbird’s reconnaissance mission, allowing it to survey vast areas from high altitude while traveling faster than conventional fighters.
3. Bell X-2 Starbuster — 2,094 mph
Air Force Captain Milburn “Mel” Apt flew the X-2 to 2,094 mph on September 27, 1956, becoming the first person to exceed three times the speed of sound. The rocket-powered research aircraft investigated aerodynamic heating and control at speeds beyond those explored by the earlier X-1 series.
Stainless steel and a copper-nickel alloy helped its structure withstand the demanding flight conditions. However, a turn after the speed run triggered an uncontrollable tumble, and Apt died after separating the aircraft’s escape capsule.
4. Lockheed YF-12A — 2,070 mph
The YF-12A explored whether Lockheed’s high-speed reconnaissance aircraft technology could become a long-range interceptor.
During Air Force testing on May 1, 1965, it established an official record of approximately 2,070 mph 2,070 mph.
Its largely titanium structure helped withstand the temperatures generated during sustained high-speed flight.
Although it never entered operational military service, the YF-12 later supported joint Air Force–NASA investigations into aerodynamic heating, propulsion, and structural behavior.
5. North American XB-70 Valkyrie — 2,056 mph
The enormous XB-70 Valkyrie was conceived as a nuclear-armed bomber capable of flying higher and faster than the B-52. The National Museum of the US Air Force lists its maximum speed as 2,056 mph at 73,000 feet, powered by six afterburning engines.
Its outer wingtips folded downward during supersonic flight, helping reduce drag and improve directional stability. The planned operational bomber never materialized, but the experimental aircraft supplied research data on the challenges of flying a large aircraft at such speeds.
6. McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle — 1,875 mph
The F-15 brought extreme performance into an operational air-superiority fighter, with the US Air Force publishing a maximum speed of 1,875 mph. Its design combined powerful engines with relatively low wing loading to deliver strong acceleration and maneuverability.
That combination made the Eagle more than an aircraft built for a straight-line sprint. High thrust relative to its weight helped it accelerate while climbing, giving pilots performance they could use during an engagement rather than only during a maximum-speed run.
7. Bell X-1A — approximately 1,650 mph
Chuck Yeager pushed the rocket-powered X-1A to approximately 1,650 mph on December 12, 1953. The Air Force test flight extended the work begun by the original X-1, taking piloted aircraft deeper into supersonic flight.
Reaching that speed was only part of the challenge, as the aircraft subsequently tumbled out of control. Yeager recovered, but the flight exposed dangerous handling problems that engineers needed to understand before aircraft could safely operate at still higher speeds.
8. General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark — 1,650 mph
The F-111 combined a published high-altitude maximum of approximately 1,650 mph with a mission centered on attacking ground targets, matching the X-1A’s rounded figure.
That headline speed described its high-altitude performance, rather than the speed used while following terrain close to the ground.
Its movable wings allowed different configurations for takeoff, landing, and fast flight, while terrain-following radar supported low-altitude penetration.
Despite its fighter designation, the Aardvark became a strike aircraft whose usefulness depended on reaching targets in difficult conditions as much as outright speed.
9. McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II — 1,606 mph
The F-4 Phantom II earned its place through a record flight rather than a routine combat configuration. A specially modified Phantom reached approximately 1,606 mph during Operation Skyburner in November 1961, demonstrating the performance available from its twin-engine design.
The aircraft subsequently handled air combat, ground attack, reconnaissance, and the suppression of enemy air defenses.
Its speed record should therefore be read as a test achievement, rather than a claim that every operational Phantom could reach the same figure while carrying weapons.
10. Convair F-106A Delta Dart — 1,525 mph
The Convair F-106A Delta Dart was an all-weather interceptor built to defend against attacking enemy aircraft. It entered US Air Force service in 1959 and had a maximum speed of 1,525 mph, powered by a single Pratt & Whitney J75 afterburning turbojet.
Its Hughes MA-1 guidance and fire-control system could direct the aircraft into an attack position and launch its missiles. The system could then guide the interceptor back toward its base, with the pilot taking control for landing.
Conclusion
From operational fighters to rocket-powered research planes, these aircraft pushed the limits of US military aviation.
Their speed supported missions ranging from intercepting threats to gathering intelligence and exploring flight conditions no pilot had previously experienced.
Reaching those speeds required more than powerful engines, as engineers also had to overcome intense heat and dangerous control problems.
Some designs entered frontline service, while others remained experimental, but both helped expand the understanding of high-speed flight.
