Michael Malith Dak Deng, widely regarded as the tallest man in South Sudan, has reportedly been hospitalised in Juba following a road accident on Monday.
A statement from the office of Ayod County Commissioner Gatluak Gai Teny said Dak was admitted to Nile King Specialist Hospital in Nimra Talata on Monday evening after a vehicle in the commissioner’s convoy was involved in an accident while travelling to Juba.
“The Caretaker Commissioner of Ayod County, Hon. Gatluak Gai Teny returned to Juba yesterday evening together with a delegation led by the Gawaar Community Chairman, Hon. Timothy Tot Chol,” the statement read.
“On our way, one of the cars in our convoy was involved in an accident – the car carrying our beloved son, Michael Malith Dak Deng, together with his wife and his bodyguard. But by the grace of God, they survived. He is now admitted to Nile King Specialist Hospital in Nimra Talata,” the statement added.
A source who spoke to Eye Radio by phone and requested anonymity also confirmed that Dak had been admitted to the hospital for treatment.
The commissioner’s office said Dak was travelling with his wife and bodyguard when the accident occurred.
However, the statement did not specify the severity of their injuries or where the convoy was travelling from before the accident.
Dak is understood to have recently travelled to Bor town in Jonglei State with the newly appointed governor, Moses Majok Gatluak, who was going to assume office.
The statement also named several other people involved in the accident.
Dak, who is estimated to be 7.9 feet tall, is widely known on social media for his height.
