- Solar energy is transforming how businesses generate and consume electricity.
By Samson Otieno,
As climate change continues to threaten livelihoods, industries and economies, the transition to renewable energy has become more urgent than ever.
Across Kenya and the wider African continent, solar power and sustainable biomass are emerging as practical solutions for reducing carbon emissions while supporting industrial growth.
For decades, industries have relied heavily on fossil fuels to power machinery, generate electricity and produce heat. However, rising energy costs and environmental concerns are encouraging businesses to explore cleaner alternatives.
Solar Energy: Powering Industries Sustainably
Solar energy is transforming how businesses generate and consume electricity.
By harnessing abundant sunlight, industries can reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower electricity expenses and minimise their carbon footprint.
According to Kenya's Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), the country had achieved 300.5 MW of captive solar capacity by June 2025, demonstrating growing investment in privately generated renewable electricity.
Industrial solar installations, particularly when integrated with battery storage, can improve energy reliability while supporting sustainable manufacturing.
Biomass: Turning Agricultural Waste into Energy
Biomass offers another promising pathway towards industrial decarbonisation. Agricultural residues, including sugarcane bagasse, coffee husks, sawdust and other organic materials, can be converted into useful thermal energy.
For agricultural economies like Kenya, sustainably sourced biomass provides an opportunity to reduce fossil-fuel consumption while creating economic value from agricultural waste.
However, responsible sourcing and efficient combustion technologies remain essential to ensuring genuine environmental benefits.
Engineering a Cleaner Industrial Future
Achieving meaningful emission reductions requires more than installing renewable-energy equipment. Industries must integrate electricity generation, thermal systems, energy storage and efficiency improvements.
Engineering companies such as Spenomatic Group are supporting this transition through industrial solar installations, biomass and steam solutions, battery storage and integrated energy engineering.
As Kenya advances towards its climate commitments, combining solar power, sustainable biomass and efficient industrial technologies could significantly reduce emissions while strengthening economic competitiveness.
Ultimately, a greener planet depends on practical investments that balance environmental protection with industrial productivity. By embracing renewable energy, African industries can build a cleaner, more resilient and sustainable future.
