The member representing Ikwo/Ezza South federal constituency, Ebonyi State in the House of Representatives, Chinedu Ogah, has called on the Federal Ministry of Education to consider Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu -Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI) as an internationally recognised research centre in Nigeria.
He said the status would strengthen the university’s research capacity, attract grants, and create opportunities for innovative academic programmes and specialised institutes.
He commended the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Daniel Nwachukwu, for his efforts in improving the university’s academic standards, research capacity, and community relations.
Ogah noted that within a few months of assuming office as the university’s fourth Vice-Chancellor, Nwachukwu has taken steps to build on the achievements of his predecessor, Professor Chinedu Nwajiuba.
He cited the Vice-Chancellor’s engagement with stakeholders, host communities and government, as well as efforts to attract international partnerships and introduce entrepreneurship programmes for students and staff.
Ogah described the Vice-Chancellor as focused on academics, community, innovation, and research, while also commending his people-oriented approach and efforts to ensure that admissions comply with Federal Character Commission requirements.
He also urged the Vice-Chancellor to reactivate the staff mass housing project initiated under Professor Nwajiuba, noting that the project had been approved.
He said providing staff quarters would improve living conditions, reduce the burden of high rental costs and strengthen the university’s residential community.
Ogah further commended the university’s management team and Governing Council, urging them to sustain their efforts. He assured the university of his constituency’s support and expressed his commitment to working with its leadership to promote infrastructure development, research, and quality education.
