Religion in South Africa Explained

GUIDES · SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa religion explained: who believes what, which churches matter, and where faith meets law and politics. All figures are dated and come from official sources as of October 2026.

South Africa religion is overwhelmingly Christian on paper, yet the country’s faith life is far more varied than that headline suggests. Census 2022 recorded 84.5% Christians, 7.8% followers of African traditional religion, 1.6% Muslims and 1.1% Hindus.

For US readers the practical points are legal and social. The Constitution protects every faith, churches are a political force, and a draft framework for church accountability is a live dispute.

How Many South Africans Follow Each Faith

Statistics South Africa published the religion results of Census 2022 in its Cultural Dynamics report in 2025. The census counted 62,027,503 people in total, and the religion tables cover about 60.2 million with a recorded answer.

Christianity stood at 84.5% in 2022, up from 75.9% in 1996 and 79.8% in 2001. People with no religious affiliation fell from 11.7% in 1996 to 2.9% in 2022.

African traditional religion registered 7.8% in 2022, against 0.0% in 1996 and 0.3% in 2001. Islam stood at 1.6%, Hinduism at 1.1%, Jewish faith at 0.1% and other beliefs at 0.3%.

A further 1.9% of answers were undetermined in 2022, down from 9.4% in 1996. Statistics South Africa says that fall may reflect better data collection between censuses.

The 2011 census did not ask about religion, so the series jumps from 2001 to 2022. Anyone comparing trends should keep that 21-year gap in mind.

Where Each Faith Is Strongest

Faith follows settlement history, so the provincial map matters. KwaZulu-Natal has the highest share of African traditional religion at 13.5% and of Hindus at 4.2%.

The Eastern Cape follows on African traditional religion at 11.0%, and Mpumalanga shows 7.7%. The Western Cape has the largest Muslim share at 5.2%, down from 6.9% in 1996.

The Northern Cape, North West and Free State are the most Christian provinces, at 94.3%, 94.6% and 92.2%. KwaZulu-Natal is the least Christian at 74.3%, with the highest traditional and Hindu shares.

Limpopo once had the largest unaffiliated share, at 29.4% in 2001. By 2022 that had dropped to 5.1%, while its Christian share rose from 67.8% to 86.2%.

At least 85% of Black African, coloured and white respondents are Christian. Among Indian and Asian South Africans, 37.1% are Hindu, 33.0% Christian and 24.0% Muslim.

Among Black Africans, 9.5% name African traditional religion, against 0.1% in 1996. Whites are 7.0% of respondents but 12.0% of those with no religious affiliation.

Men are 48.3% of respondents but 61.3% of those with no affiliation. Statistics South Africa’s model gives women an adjusted odds ratio of 0.52 for reporting no religion.

Christian Churches: Mainline, Zionist and Pentecostal

Christianity in South Africa spans Catholic, Anglican, Methodist and Dutch Reformed churches, African-initiated churches and newer Pentecostal congregations. The census tables reviewed here publish broad faiths, not church-by-church counts.

Writing in The Conversation in 2024, theologian Dion Forster of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam said mainline membership has steadily declined. He said African indigenous churches and neo-Pentecostal churches have grown significantly, without giving membership figures.

The Zion Christian Church (ZCC) is a major African-initiated church, with its headquarters at Moria, about 35 km from Polokwane in Limpopo. Daily Maverick describes two main groupings there, St Engenas and Star.

The St Engenas group is led by Bishop Joseph Lekganyane, and its Easter pilgrimage draws tens of thousands of members, including visitors from Eswatini and Botswana. The 2023 Easter gathering was the first mass service since 2019, after the pandemic.

The Catholic Church speaks through the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC). Cardinal Stephen Brislin is its president, as the conference website showed in October 2026.

The Vatican named Bishop Sithembele Sipuka Archbishop of Cape Town on 9 January 2026. Sipuka, previously Bishop of Mthatha, had led the SACBC as president from 2019 to 2024.

African Traditional Religion and the Shembe Church

African traditional religion centres on ancestors, family obligations and community ritual, and many followers also attend church. The census records one answer per person, so overlap between faiths is not visible in the headline numbers.

A Pew Research Center survey, with interviews from December 2008 to April 2009, found South Africa among four countries where over half believe sacrifices to ancestors can protect them. The survey covered 19 sub-Saharan countries, and its findings predate the 2022 census.

The Shembe Church, also called the Nazareth Baptist Church, is based in KwaZulu-Natal. The Sunday Tribune reported in January 2026 that it has more than a million followers in South Africa and neighbouring countries.

Each January its factions walk barefoot to holy mountains, a three-day journey of 50 to 80 km. The eBuhleni faction went to Khenana Mountain in 2026, while the eKuphakameni faction went to Nhlangakazi.

The pilgrimage has seen clashes between factions in the past, and a court order now requires them to schedule walks so as to avoid conflict. The 2026 pilgrimage was described as peaceful.

Islam, Hinduism and Judaism

Muslims are 1.6% of the population, with the highest share in the Western Cape (5.2%) and 1.9% in KwaZulu-Natal. Islam is the faith of 24.0% of Indian and Asian respondents and 6.8% of coloured respondents.

Hindus are 1.1% nationally and 4.2% in KwaZulu-Natal, the highest of any province. The Hindu share among Indian and Asian South Africans fell from 49.9% in 1996 to 37.1% in 2022.

Jewish faith registered 0.1% nationally in 2022, with 0.2% in the Western Cape. Other beliefs, a broad category, reached 0.7% in the Western Cape.

Hindus and Muslims have the highest shares of legally married adults aged 12 and over, at 49.5% and 45.8%. Christians stand at 23.9%, and followers of African traditional religion at 17.5%.

The Divorce Amendment Act, announced as signed by the Presidency on 9 May 2024, recognises Muslim marriages when they end. It defines a Muslim marriage, protects children and sets rules for dividing assets.

Faith and Politics

Politicians have courted South Africa’s churches for decades. Nelson Mandela addressed the ZCC Easter conference at Moria on 20 April 1992 and called apartheid a sin.

He also said that no government should have the right to prescribe religious observance for the country’s citizens. Section 15 of the 1996 Constitution later set rules for religious observance at state institutions.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, leader of the African National Congress (ANC), addressed the St Engenas Easter pilgrimage in 2023 and again in 2024. In 2024 he spoke ahead of the 29 May election, and Julius Malema of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) also attended.

In January 2026 the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) president, Velenkosini Hlabisa, joined the Shembe pilgrimage, and the ANC and the newer uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) sent good wishes. The IFP is rooted in KwaZulu-Natal, where the Shembe church is based.

The sources reviewed give no data on how congregants vote, so a bloc vote cannot be assumed. The visits do show that parties court the leaders of large faith communities.

The Constitution, Holidays and Religious Observance

Section 15 of the Constitution guarantees everyone freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief and opinion. It lets state and state-aided institutions hold religious observances only if they follow public rules, are equitable and are voluntary.

Section 15 also allows legislation recognising marriages and personal law under any tradition or religion, if consistent with the Constitution. Section 31 says members of a religious community may not be denied the right to practise their religion and form associations.

South Africa has 12 public holidays under the Public Holidays Act of 1994. Good Friday fell on 3 April 2026, Family Day on 6 April, Christmas Day on 25 December and the Day of Goodwill on 26 December.

No Muslim, Hindu, Jewish or African traditional festival appears on the 2026 public holiday list. Good Friday moves with the church calendar, and in 2027 it falls on 26 March.

The Row Over Regulating Churches

The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities, known as the CRL Rights Commission, is a state body. It set up a Section 22 Ad Hoc Committee for the Christian sector on 2 October 2025, after allegations of abuse by some church leaders.

The committee published a draft self-regulatory framework in December 2025, which the Mercury reported in March 2026 includes annual financial reporting, written constitutions and vetting of foreign national pastors. The Commission describes it as voluntary, with no state licensing, and says a sector council would award a “Seal of Good Standing” to churches that opt in.

Chairperson Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva said in March 2026 that existing non-profit law already requires constitutions and financial statements. The Commission listed a consultation round in the Eastern Cape for 13 to 17 July 2026.

Thousands of congregants marched in Durban in March 2026 under the South African Church Defenders banner. They demanded that the committee be scrapped and the chairperson removed.

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs said on 11 February 2026 that religious freedom is protected and congregants must be shielded from abuse. It said it was not yet in a position to comment on the process, and the Church Defenders had asked the Gauteng High Court to annul the committee.

On 16 October 2026 the Commission said it welcomed an ANC statement of 13 October that reaffirmed religious freedom and described the framework as self-regulation, not state regulation. The Commission’s statement does not mention the court case, and its outcome is not known.

How Faith Shapes Daily Life

Census 2022 found that 93.1% of households are single-religion, 3.2% have mixed religions and 3.7% have none. Faith is therefore mostly a shared household identity.

Marriage patterns differ by faith. Among adults aged 12 and over, 69.8% of followers of African traditional religion have never married, against 62.3% of Christians.

Churches shape the annual calendar through Easter pilgrimages and Christmas observance. In 2023 Bishop Lekganyane urged congregants at Moria to stop drug abuse.

The SACBC’s January 2026 plenary, themed Synodality and Mission, named corruption, lawlessness and climate change as concerns. Church bodies thus act as civil-society voices, not only as places of worship.

What It Means for US Readers

Travellers should note that Good Friday, Family Day, 25 December and 26 December are public holidays, so plan around closures. Large pilgrimages gather at Moria around Easter and in KwaZulu-Natal in January.

Investors should watch the church-regulation row, since the draft framework touches reporting by religious non-profits. It has no stated link to listed companies, and the sources reviewed show only a voluntary draft and a court challenge as of October 2026.

US faith groups, missionaries and charities should read the proposal on vetting foreign pastors closely. It was still a draft in October 2026, and whether it would affect visas or registration for foreign clergy is not clear.

Expats will meet a mostly Christian society with sizeable minorities, led by Muslims in the Western Cape and Hindus in KwaZulu-Natal. The state is secular in law, and the Constitution protects every faith.

What Is Not Known

The census tables reviewed do not split Christians by church, so the size of the ZCC, Catholic, Pentecostal and other bodies is unverified. Membership claims made by churches themselves are not audited.

Why African traditional religion rose from 0.3% in 2001 to 7.8% in 2022 is not explained in the report’s headline findings. Changes in question wording and coding could play a part, and the report does not say.

The outcome of the High Court challenge to the Section 22 Committee was not found in the sources reviewed as of October 2026. The sources also do not show whether Parliament will legislate on religious oversight.

The SACBC president was checked on the conference website in October 2026, but the ZCC leader and the CRL chairperson are as reported in 2023 to March 2026. Readers should check the church or commission directly before relying on a name or title.
