WANYJOK – A police officer in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal state shot a 34-year-old man in the thigh after the man accused him of failing to intervene in a market fight, the state police spokesperson said.
Col. Madut Ngong Aleu, the state police spokesperson, said the incident occurred at around 10 a.m. on Tuesday in Wanyjok town, Aweil East County, after the man accused the officer of failing to separate those involved in the fight before turning on him.
“The police officer called Aken Geng Dut was beaten up by a local young man called Dut Majok Garang. Dut, who was shot by the officer, Aken Geng Dut, alleges that Aken (the police officer) hadn’t play his role in separating them as he was attacked by many people,” Aleu said.
“While being abused by a civilian, he shot warning bullets, but the attacker insisted until he shot him in the thigh.”
Aleu said the injured man was taken to hospital, while the officer was detained as investigations.
He urged residents to follow legal procedures to address grievances and avoid violence against officers on duty.
