The internet has had a “Payment Required” error code since the 1990s. For most of that time, almost nothing used it.
That is changing quickly. Over the past 30 days, the number of active senders on x402, the stablecoin payment protocol built on that dormant code, rose 152% to 43,100. That means the user base more than doubled in a single month.
The growth matters because x402 is not designed mainly for people. It targets software, especially AI agents that need to pay for data, compute, and services without a human stepping in each time.
The numbers behind the surge
The 43,100 figure reflects activity as of mid-October 2026. Three blockchains account for most of it.
Base, Coinbase’s layer-2 network, leads with approximately 32,000 active senders. Algorand follows with around 9.1K, and Solana trails with about 1.6K.
Base’s lead is not exactly a surprise. Coinbase launched x402 in May 2025, so Base is effectively playing on home turf.
Transaction activity is substantial. x402.org reported 75.41 million transactions over the latest 30 days, with $24.24 million in settled volume.
Most x402 transactions are micropayments, often ranging from $0.0001 to $0.10.
The wider ecosystem now includes approximately 94,060 buyers and 22,000 sellers as of October 2026. Those counts track the broader marketplace, so they sit apart from the 30-day active sender metric.
How x402 actually works
Every time you load a webpage, your browser and a server swap status codes. “200” means things went fine. “404” means the page is missing. “402” means you need to pay first.
When a client requests something from a server that charges for access, the server replies with a 402 response. The client then pays in stablecoins, primarily USDC, directly within the standard HTTP request flow. No accounts, no API keys, no subscriptions.
The protocol supports USDC payments across EVM-compatible chains and Solana. EVM-compatible chains are blockchains that run Ethereum-style smart contracts, a category that includes Base.
That setup removes friction for machines. An AI agent cannot easily fill out a sign-up form, verify an email, or enter a credit card number. It can, however, read a status code and send a stablecoin payment.
Big names, small payments
x402 has attracted support from a notable roster of established companies. Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google, and AWS are among the firms backing the protocol’s infrastructure.
Coinbase went from launch in May 2025 to tens of thousands of monthly active senders in roughly a year and a half.
The stated goal is to power an “agent economy,” where autonomous software routinely pays for services on its own, whether that means buying a dataset, renting compute time, or calling a paid API.
What this means for stablecoins and AI payments
For the stablecoin market, x402 offers a use case that has little to do with trading. x402 points USDC toward commerce conducted by bots rather than the exchange and DeFi activity that has historically dominated stablecoin flows.
$24.24 million in monthly volume is meaningful for a young protocol, but the 75.41 million transaction count is the more telling figure, since it shows how frequently the rails are being used.
