- Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru named Kalonzo Musyoka as the opposition's most likely presidential candidate to face William Ruto in 2027
- Waiguru predicted that multiple opposition figures, including Sifuna and Matiangi, could split the vote and hand Ruto an advantage
- The governor questioned Edwin Sifuna's readiness to mount a presidential campaign, citing a specific example she said exposed his capacity gaps

The field of potential challengers includes Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiangi, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and Martha Karua.
Waiguru on Kalonzo's Chances
While acknowledging Kalonzo as the frontrunner within opposition circles, Waiguru was candid about her assessment of his electoral prospects.
"The most likely candidate for the opposition is Kalonzo Musyoka, but he can't beat William Ruto," she said.
She warned that a crowded opposition field could fragment the vote and ultimately benefit the incumbent.
"Sifuna has said he is determined to go to the ballot, so will Kalonzo and Matiangi; none of them is going to win. I don't see Kalonzo agreeing to deputise him, and Kalonzo's followers have said if it's not Kalonzo, they will go to Ruto. We have had similar sentiments from Kisii that if it's not Matiangi, they will go to Ruto," Waiguru said.
Waiguru Dismisses Sifuna's Presidential Bid
The governor was particularly pointed in her remarks about Sifuna, arguing that the Nairobi senator has not yet demonstrated the political capacity required to mount a credible presidential campaign.
She cited his inability to convince his own close allies to abandon their respective parties as a telling sign.
"Let me give you one example that made me know that Sifuna still needs time. When they were deciding on the party to run, his closest allies, who hold his hands up, he could not convince them to abandon their parties for his. That is a capacity issue," Waiguru said.
Drawing a contrast with Ruto's political track record, she added:
"Ruto, when he was still DP, convinced over 100 MPs to go with him and help him with the presidency. Ruto has the money and the machinery, so if you don't have it, what are you doing running for president?"
Despite her reservations about his 2027 prospects, Waiguru stopped short of writing Sifuna off entirely, saying the Nairobi senator has a future, but not in 2027.
