France is witnessing violent protests as thousands are storming to streets over the rising cost of living, public services and inequality. Luxury retailers, including Louis Vuitton and Hermès, have been among the businesses targeted, while fires, vandalism and clashes with police have added to the unrest. The scenes have raised a question: why are protesters smashing shop windows and walking away with expensive handbags, clothes and other goods when the demonstrations began over broader economic and social grievances?
The answer lies in a combination of public anger, political tensions and opportunistic looting. However, not everyone taking part in the demonstrations has been involved in violence or theft. As per reports, shops were targeted in cities including Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille and Lille. An Apple store in Lille and luxury boutiques in Bordeaux were among the reported targets. A Hermès store in Marseille was also reportedly attacked.
France protest reason: What has triggered the anger?
The unrest has brought together people with different complaints about the country's economic and political situation. Rising prices, concerns about public services, education and working conditions have all contributed to the demonstrations. Student protests had been building for weeks before the nationwide marches on October 17. Trade unions, workers, farmers, retirees and supporters of the Yellow Vest movement also joined the demonstrations, according to reports by AFP and Le Monde.
For many demonstrators, the issue goes beyond the cost of groceries or household bills. Their anger reflects wider concerns about inequality, living standards and the government's response to their demands. The protests have also unfolded amid political uncertainty in France, with presidential elections approaching in 2027. Different groups have brought their own demands to the streets, making the movement broad but not necessarily united behind a single objective.
Why are protesters targeting Louis Vuitton and Hermès stores?
The targeting of luxury brands has become one of the most striking aspects of the unrest. But there is no evidence that every shop attacked was selected for the same reason. Louis Vuitton and Hermès represent the high end of France's luxury fashion industry. Their products, including designer handbags, clothing and accessories, can cost thousands of euros. When people are struggling with everyday expenses, these stores can become visible symbols of wealth and economic inequality.
Some of the looting may therefore reflect anger directed at what protesters perceive as an unequal economic system. However, that does not establish the motivation of every person involved in the attacks.
There is also a more straightforward explanation for some incidents: valuable merchandise can attract opportunistic thieves when police are occupied elsewhere and crowds make it easier to escape.
Le Monde reports described groups moving through wealthy shopping districts, breaking into boutiques and taking goods. The same unrest also affected supermarkets, pharmacies, clothing shops and electronics retailers.
Which French cities are witnessing looting and violence?
The unrest has spread beyond Paris, with reports of damaged shops, fires and confrontations with security forces in several major cities.
- Paris: Masked groups smashed shop windows, set fires and clashed with riot police. Several businesses in central shopping districts were targeted.
- Bordeaux: Louis Vuitton and Apple stores were among the reported targets, with other retailers also suffering damage.
- Marseille: A Hermès boutique was reportedly targeted, while public buildings also experienced vandalism.
- Lille: An Apple store was reportedly looted.
- Lyon: Violence included damage to public property, and a tourist office was set on fire, according to reporting on the unrest.
How has the French government responded?
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence and said those responsible for vandalism, attacks on businesses and looting would face prosecution. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu also criticised the severity of the unrest. The scale of the demonstrations has been substantial. According to figures reported by Le Monde, the French authorities estimated that around 550,000 people participated nationwide, while the CGT trade union put the number at approximately 800,000.
As per reports, over 2000 people had been arrested and 150 police officers and gendarmes had been injured due to violence in protests. The government blamed organised groups of vandals, including what officials described as ultra-left elements, for much of the violence.
Are the France protests similar to the Yellow Vest movement?
The latest demonstrations have echoes of France's Yellow Vest movement, which began in 2018 amid anger over fuel prices and the cost of living. That movement grew into a broader expression of frustration with economic inequality and the policies of Macron's government. Protesters from different backgrounds joined marches and road blockades, while some demonstrations also descended into violence.
The October 2026 protests have brought Yellow Vest supporters together with students, trade unions and other groups. The common thread is dissatisfaction with living costs and wider social conditions, although the participants do not necessarily share identical demands. The comparison also highlights an important difference between peaceful protest and criminal acts. Large numbers of people can demonstrate against government policies without participating in looting, arson or attacks on police.
