A Jashore court today (14 October) ordered Jahangir Hossain, 36, to be sent to jail in a case filed over an alleged attack on actor Somu Chowdhury in the district town.
Jahangir was arrested last night (13 October) after Somu filed a case against two people. He was produced before the court this afternoon, and the judge ordered his imprisonment.
The other accused is Hridoy Hossain, who owns a motorcycle garage near the actor's home. Police were continuing efforts to arrest him.
Kazi Babul Hossain, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Jashore Kotwali Police Station, said one of the two accused had been arrested and produced before the court, which ordered him to be sent to jail.
The case was filed hours after Somu was allegedly attacked in front of his house on Bejpara Naldanga Road in the Notun Bazar area of Jashore city on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the actor, an argument broke out with Jahangir, a mechanic at a nearby motorcycle garage, over keeping the area clean. He alleged that Jahangir and Hridoy later struck him on the head with a brick, injuring him.
Locals rescued Somu and took him to the emergency department of Jashore General Hospital, where he received three stitches to his head. He returned home around 1:20pm after receiving treatment.
After the incident, Somu said he had good relations with local residents and had wanted to keep the neighbourhood clean, but his efforts had caused problems for some people. He also said he was considering filing an attempted murder case over the attack.
Hridoy denied involvement, saying he was not present at the scene. However, he said Jahangir had told him over the phone that he attacked the actor following an argument involving insults directed at his mother and sister.
Cultural figures and locals have condemned the incident and called for a proper investigation and legal action against those responsible.
