Google pulled the best Gemini models from free users; here's the cheapest fix

Until recently, free Gemini was a steal. Without handing Google a dime, you got Gemini 3.6 Flash and a taste of Gemini 3.1 Pro, the same models AI Plus subscribers paid for.

Better yet, the usage caps were generous enough that you'd only hit them if you used Gemini full-time.

That deal ended on October 9. Gemini 3.6 Flash and Gemini 3.1 Pro are now reserved for paid subscribers, and free accounts can no longer pick a model.

Everyone else on a personal Google account gets Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite. It's pay-to-play. So let's break down what each tier gets you and which one deserves your money.

Your free Gemini is now a goldfish with a speed boost

Flash-Lite is fast, but it isn't built for hard problems

Most of what free users get now comes from Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite. Google built Flash-Lite to run cheaply, which makes it fast and great for high-volume jobs like translation and quick rewrites.

However, hard analytical problems aren't its strong suit. Google says it's a big step up from its predecessor, and it even beats last year's Gemini 3 Flash on many coding and agent tasks.

That's impressive for a lightweight model, but it's still lightweight, and it's the first to choke on tricky math or long chains of logic compared with the models paying subscribers get.

Brainpower isn't the only thing getting capped. Free accounts are also limited to a 32,000-token context window.

That means Gemini can hold about 24,000 words (around 50 pages) before it starts forgetting earlier parts of long chats like a goldfish.

Your uploads count against that window too, so Gemini will likely miss details buried in long PDFs.

Like every plan, the free tier is metered by compute. Your allowance refills every five hours up to a weekly cap, and free accounts get the smallest one.

If you throw anything heavy at Gemini, you'll burn through it fast. And when the servers get busy, free users are the first to get throttled.

AI Plus is the $5 upgrade most people need

Cheaper than ChatGPT Go and easy to justify

If you use Gemini for any office work, AI Plus is the must-have upgrade. In June, Google cut the price from $8 to $5 a month and doubled the storage to 400GB.

That storage is shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos, which is a decent deal on its own. Mostly, you're paying to use Gemini Flash, a big step up from Flash-Lite for coding and multistep tasks.

You also get a 128,000-token context window. That's roughly 190 pages, enough for a long report or several research papers at once.

AI Plus also brings Gemini into Gmail, with built-in proofreading and AI Inbox (still rolling out), though Gemini in Docs and Sheets still requires AI Pro.

Even so, $5 a month for Flash, Gmail smarts, and 400GB of storage is a steal, and it's about $3 cheaper than ChatGPT Go.

If you're invested in Google's ecosystem, this is the plan I'd recommend for most people.

AI Pro at $20 is for power users

Enjoy Google's top models and 5TB of storage

AI Pro gives you baseline access to Google's premium models and targets developers and data analysts, plus anyone running high-volume creative work.

You get Gemini 3.1 Pro, which Google lists as its top model in the app until Gemini 4 Argon arrives. You also get Gemini 3.8 Flash, Google's newest Flash model.

The context window jumps to 1 million tokens. That's about 1,500 pages of text or 30,000 lines of code, according to Google's math, enough for a small to midsize codebase.

Your usage allowance is four times that of the free tier. The Pro model, however, burns it faster than Flash. Storage climbs to 5TB, which is enough that you may not need a separate backup drive.

For developers, the bigger draw is outside the Gemini app. AI Pro raises your limits in Antigravity, Google's agentic coding platform.

Deep Think is also on the way. Until now, Google reserved this extended reasoning mode for AI Ultra, which starts at $100 a month.

It throws maximum parallel reasoning at one hard problem, so it's slow by design (don't use it to ask about the weather).

So is $20 enough for developers? For side projects, studying, and using AI as a coding partner a few hours a day, it is. If you run coding agents all day, it probably isn't.

Free, Plus, Pro, or Ultra, and which one fits you

Pick your plan by how hard you work with Gemini.

Go too big, and you're pouring money down the drain on usage limits you'll never use. Go too cheap, and you'll keep hitting your usage cap mid-task.

The free tier still works for low-stakes tasks. Asking for a recipe or fixing a syntax error doesn't need a monthly fee.

I'd call AI Plus the plan for most people who work at a computer. If your days are full of long email threads and PDF reports, 3.6 Flash and its 128,000-token context window are well-matched to that kind of load.

AI Pro is for developers and anyone who regularly feeds hundreds of pages of documentation into a prompt.

If you write software, you need at least Pro, and if you run coding agents all day, you'll likely outgrow it.

That's where Ultra comes in. At $100 a month, it's overkill for most people, but it's where Google wants its heaviest users, and it's first in line for Gemini 4 Argon.

Good AI now costs at least $5 a month, and that's the new normal

Running frontier AI takes server capacity and energy. Handing that to non-paying users forever was always a play for market share and training data.

That phase is done. A capable assistant built into your daily work now costs about $5 a month.

For my money, that's the sweet spot for most people. If you've stayed on the free tier, you've probably noticed the tool you knew is a shell of its former self.
