The Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court yesterday (12) rejected an anticipatory bail application filed on behalf of former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa.
Rajapaksa filed the application seeking anticipatory bail to prevent her being arrested by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) in connection with the Siriliya Saviya account.
The application was first taken up before the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court on 06 October, during which the court also issued a notice directing the Officer-in-Charge of the FCID to appear before the court yesterday (12) and report facts regarding the matter.
However, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), on 7 October, arrested Mrs. Rajapaksa on the specific charge of misappropriating Rs 10 mn, obtained from the National Savings Bank (NSB), to procure a Computed Tomography (CT) scanner for the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo. Produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s court she was remanded till 13 October, pending investigations.
The police are probing alleged financial irregularities and suspicious transactions linked to the “Siriliya” and “Siriliya Saviya” foundation accounts.
