On Saturday, former President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump took advantage of early voting, casting their ballots at the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections office in Florida. This comes just over a week before the midterm elections scheduled for November 3rd.
Arriving at the voting center around 4:00 PM local time, Trump was asked by reporters whether he had supported Republican candidates. His response was succinct: "Tremendously."
Following their vote, Trump headed to Perry, Georgia, to rally support for Republican candidates, including Senate hopeful Mike Collins and gubernatorial candidate Rick Perry, at a campaign event.
Before boarding his plane, Trump boasted to the media about the rigor of his campaign schedule: "I’m going to Georgia. It's a real effort. What I've done is not normal."
During the same interaction, he candidly acknowledged the challenges his party faces: "An incumbent president always faces tough outcomes in midterm elections."
Nonetheless, Trump emphasized the unprecedented nature of his campaigning efforts: "No president has campaigned like I have. I've campaigned very, very hard. I want to continue because we’ve passed incredible legislation."
Republican Challenges in the Midterms
The electoral landscape appears challenging for Republicans. Trump's approval ratings hover between 33% and 39%, while Democrats hold a roughly ten-point lead over Republicans in national generic ballots, according to various polls. The Cook Political Report forecasts a Democratic gain of between five and 15 seats in the House of Representatives, potentially jeopardizing the current Republican majority of 218 seats to 214.
Contradiction in Voting Approach
Trump's early voting stands out, given his previous criticisms of early and mail-in voting, which he had labeled as fraudulent. Yet, in this campaign, he has actively encouraged his supporters in Florida and Michigan to vote early to energize his base.
Nationwide, early voting had surpassed 26.8 million ballots as of the end of the day, with Democrats comprising 47.4% of registered votes based on affiliation, compared to 29.2% for Republicans.
In his post-vote press briefing, Trump also touched on the situation with Iran: "We're considering it, maybe tomorrow. Do you really think I’d tell you if we’re going to do it? There’s also a chance for a nice, big, beautiful deal. They want a deal, but the question is, will they keep it?”
Melania's Role in Ukraine Diplomacy
The president also took the opportunity to praise Melania's diplomatic efforts related to the conflict in Ukraine. The White House credited the First Lady with helping to secure a local humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshki, a frontline city with about 6,000 trapped residents, announced on Friday and set to take effect on October 27th.
"I think she’s doing better than the professionals right now. She’s secured a ceasefire. This is about children and people, elderly people," Trump remarked about his wife.
