Ruto made the accusations on Monday, October 12, at campaign-style rallies in Nandi and Uasin Gishu counties, marking the start of a 10-day development tour of the North Rift region.
Ruto accuses Kenyatta of breaking political deal
The president alleged that he had stood firmly behind Kenyatta throughout his two successful presidential campaigns in 2013 and 2017, only for Kenyatta to abandon him when he sought the presidency in 2022.
"Mimi William Ruto nilikupigia kura mara nne. Mimi nilisimama na wewe katika safari yako ya kutafuta uongozi. Nikasimama na wewe 2013, 2017. Wewe ukanitapeli," Ruto said.
He alleged the two had a mutual understanding that Kenyatta would serve for a decade before supporting Ruto's own presidential ambitions for a similar period. According to Ruto, Kenyatta instead encouraged Kenyans not to vote for him.
"Ukasema miaka kumi ya Uhuru na ya Ruto kumi. Wakati yangu ilifika ukanitapeli, ukanikwepa, ukaambia Wakenya wasinipigie kura," he added.
Warning to Opposition Figures Allied With Kenyatta
Ruto directed pointed remarks at opposition leaders currently allied with the former President, urging them to reconsider their association and suggesting they seek his counsel on Kenyatta's track record.
"Na wale majamaa wanahangaika na Uhuru Kenyatta waniulize mimi. Huyo jamaa ni mtapeli mkubwa sana. Kama alitapeli mimi nilimpigia kura na campaign, si atawamalizia asubuhi?" he posed.
He further alleged that Kenyatta had similarly let down former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, claiming Kenyatta was responsible for Matiang'i's departure from the country.
"Ulimtapeli Raila Odinga, umemtapeli Kalonzo Musyoka, ukamtapeli Matiang'i. Ni wewe ulimtoa ng'ambo. Wewe my friend wachana na mimi," Ruto said.
The President also dismissed Kenyatta's ongoing public criticism of his administration, accusing the former Head of State of leaving behind a weak economy and a troubled education sector.
"Ati anazunguka Kenya akiambia watu walifanya makosa. Watu walifanya makosa gani? Wewe uliacha masomo yetu kwa mtaro. Ukaacha uchumi kwa shimo. Please, Mr. Kenyatta, give us a break," he said, adding: "You are the most ungrateful person I have met."
The remarks represent one of Ruto's most direct and sustained public attacks on Kenyatta since taking office in September 2022, and come as political activity intensifies in the run-up to the next general election.
