Approximately 250,000 visitors, more than four thousand participants from 110 countries, three and a half thousand events, covered by almost eight thousand journalists. Frankfurt in Germany has is the largest and oldest book fair in the world, and Latvia's participation is guaranteed, as usual, by the "Latvian Literature" platform and its instantly recognizable "Introvert Stand".
In this ocean of books, foreign publishers and readers are traditionally most impressed by Latvian children's literature. This year in Frankfurt, Latvian authors were represented by Dace Krēsliņa with the book "Postaža parkā".
And foreign readers are also interested in our historical literature. Sven Kuzmin's "Brīvībene" can also be included in such works in a sense. It was with the German translation of this book that the writer participated in the Frankfurt market. The fact that there will be interest in his work abroad is confirmed by his collaboration with the translator Lila Raif.
One of the strategic goals of our representative office is to become a guest country of the Frankfurt market, which would highlight not only the Latvian book industry, but also culture, business, sports and other sectors through special events outside Frankfurt.
"Georgia's experience shows that the country's tourism has increased; Finnish colleagues show that there is no longer any need to explain what Finland is," said Ildze Jansone, a representative of the Latvian Literature platform, about the experiences of other countries.
This year the guest country of honor is the Czech Republic, next year it will be Romania. But the organizers of the Latvian stand emphasize that interest in our country at the Frankfurt Book Fair is only growing.
“The Frankfurt Book Fair is the world’s largest trade fair for books, and taking part offers Latvia a valuable opportunity to showcase itself. Not only does it help to promote Latvian literature and authors, but it also helps shape the country’s image internationally and tell Latvia’s story more broadly,” said Inga Bodnarjuka-Mrazauskas, head of the Latvian Literature platform.
This year, Latvia is represented at the book fair by publishers “Jāņa Rozes apgāds”, “Liels un mazs”, “Latvijas mediji”, “Aminori”, “Madris”, “Pētergailis” and “Zvaigzne ABC”, printing companies “Latgales druka”, “Drukātava” and “Rīga Prints”, the content studio “TAPT”, the “Sibīrijas bērni” foundation, the Latvian Publishers Association; the Trīs krāsas art education centre; and the Latvian Literature platform. Latvia’s participation in the Frankfurt Book Fair is financially supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA).
