Linton Crystal Technologies, an equipment maker based in Rochester, New York, filed a patent infringement complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas against Chinese machinery manufacturer Zhejiang Jingsheng Mechanical and Electrical, known as JSG.
The legal dispute centers on high-precision industrial furnaces called Czochralski crystal pullers. The machines melt raw silicon and grow monocrystalline silicon ingots, which are subsequently sliced into thin wafers to make solar cells. Ingot pulling represents the foundational first step in the entire solar manufacturing chain.
What the lawsuit claims
Linton alleges that JSG infringed on its patented designs for specialized seed-lifting and rotating systems used inside high-temperature crystal pullers. The systems carefully regulate the growing silicon crystal as it is drawn out of the molten material to ensure uniform structure and diameter.
According to the court complaint, Linton and JSG competed directly to supply crystal-growth furnaces for a major photovoltaic project in the United States.
Linton claims JSG secured the supply contract by utilizing contested designs and subsequently began importing the hardware into the country.
To establish personal jurisdiction in Texas, Linton cites public market reports showing that JSG secured a massive contract to supply crystal pullers and associated equipment for a 10 GW photovoltaic production line in Texas, with deliveries scheduled in 2026.
Potential connection to Tesla
Although Tesla is not named as a defendant in the litigation, the location, equipment scale, and delivery timelines match public regulatory filings for Project Crystal Sun, Tesla’s proposed $10.1 billion vertically integrated solar cell and module factory in Fort Bend County, Texas.
Recent local regulatory proceedings show that the local school board approved property tax incentives for the massive project footprint. The filings outline an $8.6 billion capital commitment specifically earmarked for manufacturing equipment and personal property. Unlike standard assembly facilities that simply wire imported cells into finished panels, equipment lists for the Texas project detail comprehensive machinery for upstream ingot pulling, wafer slicing, chemical coating, and automated cell fabrication.
Industry context
The litigation highlights the intense competitive pressures surrounding upstream machinery as developers race to build domestic solar wafer and cell production lines. While U.S. manufacturing incentives and domestic content rules encourage fully localized supply chains, the specialized heavy hardware required for ingot and wafer manufacturing remains heavily reliant on global equipment suppliers.
Neither Linton, JSG, nor Tesla immediately responded to requests for comment regarding the litigation. The case, Linton Crystal Technologies Corp. v. Zhejiang Jingsheng Mechanical and Electrical Co., Ltd., is pending before U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap in the Marshall Division of the Eastern District of Texas.
