MNANGAGWA: THE PRISON YEARS, THE MARRIAGE AND THE MISSING PIECES OF HISTORY
I do not doubt that President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa participated in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle. His involvement in the fight for independence is part of our country’s political history.
However, as a political scholar and student of history, I have come across an interesting historical discrepancy that I would genuinely appreciate some help understanding.
WAS MNANGAGWA RELEASED FROM PRISON IN 1973 OR 1975?
According to his official presidential biography, Mnangagwa was released from prison in 1973.
However, other published biographical accounts place his release in 1975.
Now, here is where my curiosity begins.
Biographical accounts also indicate that Mnangagwa married his first wife, Jayne Matarise, in September 1973. The couple went on to have six children.
This raises a perfectly legitimate historical question:
If Mnangagwa married Jayne in September 1973, was he already out of prison, or was he still serving his sentence?
And if he was released in 1973, why do some historical accounts place his release two years later, in 1975?
Could the discrepancy arise from confusion between his release from prison, his deportation to Zambia and his subsequent involvement in the liberation struggle?
I am not suggesting that marriage and imprisonment are necessarily incompatible. Nor am I questioning his liberation credentials.
I am simply trying to establish an accurate chronology.
History is not merely about celebrating our leaders. It is also about understanding their lives through dates, documents and verifiable events.
Surely, after more than four decades of independence, we should be able to establish precisely when our President entered prison, when he was released and when he married his first wife.
So, to those who have studied Zimbabwe’s liberation history, particularly those familiar with the prison records and early ZANU history:
Was it 1973 or 1975? And what historical evidence settles the question?
I welcome informed contributions, especially from historians, liberation-war veterans and anyone with access to primary historical records.
This is not an attack. It is a historical inquiry.
After all, asking questions about history does not change history. It helps us establish what actually happened.
