The Chief of Staff to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi, has resigned his appointment with immediate effect, amid reports of changes within the governor’s political and administrative circle ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ogunwuyi’s resignation was announced in a letter dated October 12, 2026, and addressed to Makinde, in which he formally notified the governor of his decision to leave the position.
“I respectfully write to resign my appointment as Chief of Staff to the Governor of Oyo State, with effect from today, 12th October, 2026,” he wrote.
The former Chief of Staff did not state any reason for his resignation or indicate whether he was leaving government to pursue another political assignment.
His departure comes at a time when Makinde’s political future has attracted attention following reports of his presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ogunwuyi, who had been a prominent figure in the governor’s administration since his appointment in 2021, was previously associated with the political activities of the Oyo State governor.
However, the resignation letter did not establish any connection between his decision and the governor’s reported presidential ambition or the political developments surrounding the administration.
In the letter, Ogunwuyi expressed gratitude to Makinde for the opportunity to serve the state, describing his experience in government as an honour and a fulfilling period of public service.
“Serving the government and the good people of Oyo State has been a great honour. It has been deeply fulfilling to be part of the exceptional team that has worked relentlessly to deliver the remarkable achievements of this administration,” he said.
He added that he remained proud of the administration’s achievements and its efforts to promote the growth, development and prosperity of Oyo State.
Ogunwuyi also expressed confidence in the continued progress of the state, while reaffirming his loyalty to Oyo State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest esteem and unwavering loyalty to Oyo State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he added.
Political developments surrounding Makinde
The resignation comes amid reports of the departure of several political appointees from Makinde’s administration in recent months. However, details of the circumstances surrounding Ogunwuyi’s exit and whether it is connected to the reported departures have not been disclosed.
Makinde’s political calculations ahead of 2027 have also featured in public discussions, particularly following his comments about his relationship with President Bola Tinubu and the appointment of ministers from Oyo State.
In a separate report published on Monday, the governor said he had nominated Bimbo Adekanmbi for a ministerial position but Tinubu appointed Adebayo Adelabu instead.
The development has drawn attention to the political relationships and interests shaping the state’s position ahead of the next general elections. However, there is no indication in Ogunwuyi’s resignation letter that the ministerial disagreement influenced his decision to leave office.
Ogunwuyi’s political and administrative career
Before becoming Chief of Staff in July 2021, Ogunwuyi served as Executive Assistant on Investment to Makinde and subsequently as Director-General of the Oyo State Investment and Public-Private Partnership Agency (OYSIPA).
His appointment as Chief of Staff followed his experience in public administration and investment promotion, placing him in a strategic position within the governor’s office.
Ogunwuyi is also a former member of the Oyo State House of Assembly and the House of Representatives. At the federal level, he represented the Ogbomoso North, Ogbomoso South and Oriire Federal Constituency.
His resignation marks the end of his tenure as one of the key officials in Makinde’s administration. As of the announcement, he had not publicly disclosed his next political or professional move, while the governor’s office had not announced a successor in the information provided.
