Ruth Rowe, 34, and her husband Steven, 35, sold their car, furniture, and belongings on online marketplaces to buy a one-way ticket to Sri Lanka in 2023. The couple decided to leave their barn conversion in Herefordshire to spend more time with their two children, Aurora, four, and Atlas, three, before they entered the formal school system.
Living on the road saves the family thousands annually
According to a report by The Mirror, the family spends about R46,000 a month travelling through various countries compared to the R69,000 monthly living costs they incurred back in the UK. They have visited 17 countries—including Costa Rica, Guatemala, Ecuador, and Indonesia—while staying four weeks at a time in Airbnbs and funding their journey through Steven's remote online coaching business.
The couple embraces "world-schooling," allowing their children to learn practical skills like counting using local currencies, learning languages on the road, and exploring nature. Ruth shared that their children receive zero screen time on their travels, which has taught them patience and creativity while growing their confidence during their global journey.
Travel family pokes fun at social media presence
In a light-hearted video posted on the Instagram account @digitalrowemads on 21 October 2026, the Rowe family joked about their social media presence, captioning the post: "We did it. We found our niche 😂😅. But seriously, our life is cool, so follow along, yeah." The video shows the family of four dancing together atop a scenic, grassy hill overlooking a sprawling lake and mountain backdrop. On-screen text overlaid across the clip humorously reads, "We found our niche, being a full-time travel family with a really small following."
