Germany wants a role in Greece’s next generation of submarines. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius raised the idea of joint work on the advanced Type 212 CD class when he met Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias on Wednesday at the Crete Firing Range.
The Hellenic Navy’s submarine renewal isn’t expected to be funded until after 2030. Talks on which vessels to choose will only start once Greece’s 2027 national elections are over. Even so, Pistorius suggested the submarines could be built in Greece itself and called the country a “trusted partner.”
Dendias said Athens wants closer defence ties with Berlin. He pointed to joint training, hosting German troops, better interoperability between the two militaries, and buying common equipment. He also invited Pistorius to visit Athens officially to keep the dialogue going.
The two ministers also covered:
- Their forces’ shared role in the NATO-led KFOR mission in Kosovo
- Pilot training at Kalamata
- Greece’s interest in the IRIS-T SLS air defence missiles recently tested on Crete
