President John Dramani Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has urged public officers to demonstrate honesty and integrity in the performance of their duties, describing such virtues as important to improve the livelihood of people.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the World Assemblies of God (AG) Congress in Accra yesterday, President Mahama said faith should inspire leaders to serve conscientiously, respect citizens and pay particular attention to people whose concerns were often overlooked by those in positions of authority.
“Our faith should deepen our humility. It must strengthen our respect for our citizens. It must imbue us with honesty and integrity, and it must sharpen our attention for those whose voices are least likely to reach the centre of power.
“Some people may never attend a conference like this, but they will experience its meaning through our actions when we return home,” he stated.
He said the impact of faith could be seen in a teacher’s patience, a business owner’s honesty, a health worker’s care, an employer’s fairness and a public servant’s integrity among others and, therefore, urged the church to strengthen its commitment to serving communities, particularly people facing hardship.
President Mahama also reaffirmed his commitment to serving all Ghanaians irrespective of their religious beliefs, stressing that his constitutional responsibility as President required him to treat everyone fairly.
According to President Mahama, his faith remained a source of strength and reflection, but could not override his obligation to serve Christians, Muslims, adherents of traditional religions and citizens who professed no faith.
He said the country’s religious diversity was an important national asset that needed to be protected and nurtured to promote peaceful coexistence.
“Ghana’s religious diversity is our most precious possession, and we must continue to nurture the relationships that enable neighbours of different faiths to live, work, and care for one another,” he stressed.
He explained that religious diversity was personal to him, growing up from a multi-faith family and had Muslim siblings, adding that their different religious beliefs had not affected the love and affection they shared.
The President also urged churches and households to provide young people with guidance, mentorship and opportunities to develop their abilities and contribute meaningfully to society.
He said young people were growing up in a rapidly changing world that offered extraordinary opportunities but also exposed them to lots of pressure, misinformation and competing influences.
He, therefore, encouraged religious leaders to create environments where young people could ask questions and receive guidance, stressing that religious authority came with responsibilities.
The President also called for greater recognition of women in the church, stating that their contributions and leadership should be valued as religious institutions prepared for the future.
President Mahama received the maiden Global Leadership Excellence Award from the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, describing him as the first member of the Assemblies of God worldwide to become President of a country, and was presented with a Bible as well as encouraged to allow the Word of God to guide him, while First Lady, Lordina Mahama, was also honoured for her work in supporting vulnerable people in society.
Other members of the church who were also honoured include former President of Malawi, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, who received the Global Leadership Excellence Award in recognition of his leadership and contribution to the church.
He was described in the citation as the first minister of the gospel within the fellowship having served as General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God to become president of a country.
World Assemblies of God Congress, hosted for the first time in Africa, brought together scores of Assemblies of God members from the diaspora, African countries, members of the clergy, dignitaries of state and several other denominations in the country.
The congress, which started on Wednesday, October 14, featuring revival rallies in the evening at the Accra Sports Stadium led by the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana among other leaders, will end on Friday, October 16, 2026.
