Tom Welling has found himself at the centre of an unexpected social-media controversy after an innocent photograph of the New York City skyline reportedly revealed far more than the actor intended.
The Smallville star, 49, was staying in New York for New York Comic Con when he shared a picture from his hotel room on Instagram Stories. The image was supposed to showcase the city view, accompanied by the simple greeting “Hello NYC.”

However, the reflection in the window reportedly captured Welling naked, turning an ordinary travel update into an embarrassing online moment.
According to reports, the Story remained visible for approximately 10 hours before it was deleted. By then, social-media users had reportedly noticed the reflection, with screenshots of the image circulating online even after the original post disappeared.
Welling has not publicly addressed the incident, and there has been no indication that the image was intended to reveal anything personal.
The apparent mistake is a reminder of how easily reflections in glass can capture details that someone sharing a photograph might not notice, particularly when the focus is on a distant view rather than the surroundings inside a room.
The timing has added another layer of attention to the incident. Welling was in New York for a major gathering of the Smallville cast, bringing together several familiar faces from the superhero drama as the series approaches its 25th anniversary.

The convention brought Welling back together with Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor, Kristin Kreuk, who portrayed Lana Lang, and Erica Durance, who appeared as Lois Lane.
The group participated in a reunion celebrating the series, which originally premiered in 2001 and concluded in 2011 after ten seasons.
For fans, the reunion offered an opportunity to revisit a show that helped establish a different take on Superman's origins.
Rather than beginning with Clark Kent as an established superhero, Smallville followed his journey through adolescence and early adulthood as he gradually discovered his abilities and destiny.
Welling became closely associated with the role, playing Clark throughout the show's run. Rosenbaum's portrayal of Lex Luthor also became a defining part of the series, with the evolving relationship between the two characters providing one of its central storylines. Kreuk and Durance were similarly important to the show's romantic and dramatic arcs.
Despite the attention surrounding his Instagram mishap, Welling continued with his convention appearances.
Coverage of the reunion showed him meeting fans and signing memorabilia, while the cast shared memories from their years working together.
Interestingly, the actor even discussed a separate, unusual experience involving an image of himself during the reunion.
Welling recalled that former co-star John Glover, who played Lionel Luthor, once brought him a fabricated nude picture found online and asked him to sign it. Welling said he played along when Glover asked whether the picture was genuine.
“John came into my makeup trailer one time with a big smile on his face,” Welling said, according to coverage of the panel. “And he goes, ‘I’m so happy to see you.’ I was like, ‘Why?’ He’s like, ‘I have a picture I’d like you to sign.’ And it was a picture from the internet that somebody had made of me completely naked.”
He continued: “He thought it was so cute,” Tom said. “He’s like, ‘Is this really you?’ I’m like, ‘Yep.’ And I signed it for him.”
Beyond the reunion, the Smallville legacy has also prompted discussion about a possible animated continuation. Welling and Rosenbaum revealed plans for a sequel project in 2021, hoping to bring back familiar characters and continue the story after the original series ended.
However, the proposal had not received the necessary approval from Warner Bros. by 2024. Welling explained the situation to ScreenRant, saying: “We want it to work. The honest answer is we have not been able to get Warner Brothers to give us the thumbs up. We need their permission.
“We haven’t even gotten a response! It’s the weirdest thing because it is more of a fan-driven idea. It’s not going to be a blockbuster. It’s not going to be a financial windfall for any of us. We all like each other, we all like working together, and if we could do it, it’d be fun.
“But Warner Bros., and I’m not hating on them, they just haven’t gotten back to us. It’s not a priority for them. It’s like a not-returning-phone-calls-thing.”
For now, there is no confirmed return to Smallville on the horizon. Instead, Welling's New York visit has generated headlines for an entirely different reason, after a skyline photograph reportedly captured an unintended reflection.
While the actor has yet to comment publicly on the post, the episode has quickly become an unexpected talking point alongside the show's anniversary celebrations.
