The Johor Fire and Rescue Department’s (JBPM) operations command centre said a fire engine from the Pasir Gudang Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene, about seven kilometres away, at 10.11pm.
The operation was also joined by personnel from the Johor Jaya Fire and Rescue Station, bringing the total deployment to 18 firefighters equipped with FRT, CFRT and EMRS vehicles.
“Firefighters faced difficulties in bringing the blaze under control due to the lack of nearby water sources, forcing them to use seawater during the operation,” the department said in a statement today.
It added that firefighters had to make repeated trips to a fire hydrant about 3.5km away to replenish their tanker trucks.
By 3.17am, the fire had spread across an area of about 500 square feet, affecting the fibre storage facility and the stack of buoys.
Firefighting operations were divided into two sectors at 5.33am to speed up containment efforts.
According to the department’s latest update this morning, firefighting operations were still underway.
No casualties have been reported.
