Former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard will take charge of Mumbai Indians as head coach ahead of IPL 2027. The five-time IPL champions announced the appointment on Saturday, with Pollard replacing Mahela Jayawardene.
Pollard has been working as Mumbai Indians' batting coach for the past few seasons. The franchise has now promoted him to the top coaching role, continuing its long association with the former West Indies T20 captain.
"Mumbai Indians are pleased to announce the elevation of Kieron Pollard to Head Coach, extending one of the most enduring player-to-coach associations in cricket," MI said in a statement.
MI look to build on their legacy
Mumbai Indians said Pollard's appointment was part of their plan to build on the team's success, develop young players and maintain their winning culture.
"Pollard's appointment reflects Mumbai Indians' commitment to building on the team's legacy while continuing to develop talent, strengthen its culture and pursue excellence on and off the field."
"His leadership will be rooted in the experience of having been part of MI's most successful years, alongside the ambition to shape the team's next chapter," the franchise said.
MI are among the most successful teams in IPL history, having won the title five times. However, their last championship came in 2020. One of Pollard's biggest challenges will be to help the team end its title drought.
Pollard speaks about his bond with MI
Pollard said Mumbai Indians had played a major role in his career and that he understood the responsibility of leading the team.
"MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me," Pollard said in a statement shared by the franchise.
"Having experienced this journey as a player and then as a coach, I understand what Mumbai Indians stands for and the responsibility that comes with representing the Blue and Gold," he added.
Pollard's record with Mumbai Indians
The 39-year-old has played in franchise T20 leagues around the world. In the IPL, however, he represented only Mumbai Indians, from 2009-10 until his final appearance in the 2022 edition.
Pollard also represented MI New York in Major League Cricket this year.
In 189 IPL matches for Mumbai Indians, Pollard scored 3,412 runs at an average of 28.67 and a strike rate of 147.32. His record includes 16 half-centuries. He also took 69 wickets, with his best figures being 4/44.
