Cristiano Ronaldo has moved to within 18 goals of reaching 1,000 official career goals after scoring in Al Nassr’s 3-1 victory over Al Faisaly in the Saudi Pro League on Friday.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain reached 982 career goals with a second-half header, extending his remarkable pursuit of a landmark that would represent one of the most extraordinary individual achievements in football. Blueprint reports
Ronaldo scored in the 48th minute after connecting with a free-kick delivery from compatriot João Félix. The goal doubled Al Nassr’s advantage and took the forward’s official senior career tally to 982 for club and country.
The strike was particularly significant because Ronaldo had remained on 981 goals since finding the net against Neftchi Fargona in the AFC Champions League Elite on October 12.
His latest effort puts the five-time Ballon d’Or winner just 18 goals short of the 1,000 mark as he continues to score at the highest level in the latter stages of his career.
Ronaldo strikes as Al Nassr beat Al Faisaly
Al Nassr secured the three points with a 3-1 victory over Al Faisaly, with Ronaldo among the scorers in a match that kept the club firmly involved in the Saudi Pro League title race.
Abdullah Al-Hamdan opened the scoring in the third minute with a powerful effort from outside the penalty area. Al Nassr carried the advantage into the break before Ronaldo increased the lead shortly after half-time.
João Félix delivered a free-kick into the penalty area, allowing Ronaldo to rise and direct a header towards goal. Although replays appeared to suggest a possible touch by an Al Faisaly defender, the Saudi Pro League credited the goal to the Portuguese forward.
Al Faisaly reduced the deficit through Théo Bongonda in the 65th minute, briefly raising hopes of a comeback. However, Ângelo restored Al Nassr’s two-goal cushion in the 78th minute to seal the victory.
Ronaldo also appeared to score again shortly after his first goal, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
The disallowed strike did not affect his official tally, which stood at 982 after the match.
The road to 1,000 goals
Ronaldo’s pursuit of 1,000 official senior career goals has become one of the most closely followed individual milestones in world football.
The forward has built his tally across spells with Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al Nassr, in addition to his international career with Portugal.
His goalscoring record at Real Madrid accounts for the largest share of his club total. He scored 450 goals for the Spanish giants, establishing himself as the club’s all-time leading scorer before leaving in 2018.
He subsequently scored 101 goals for Juventus and recorded 145 goals across his spells with Manchester United. His early senior career at Sporting CP produced five goals, while his move to Al Nassr has continued to add to his overall tally.
At international level, Ronaldo has scored 146 goals for Portugal, making him the leading men’s international goalscorer.
His latest strike against Al Faisaly added another goal to his Al Nassr record and brought the combined total to 982.
The figures underline the consistency that has defined his career across different leagues, competitions and stages of professional football.
A career built on longevity and consistency
Ronaldo’s latest achievement is also a reflection of his longevity. Having made his senior debut for Sporting CP before moving to Manchester United in 2003, he has sustained his career across more than two decades at the highest level.
His development at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson helped establish him as one of the leading players in Europe. He later reached another level at Real Madrid, where his goalscoring rivalry with Lionel Messi became a defining feature of an era in world football.
During his time in Spain, Ronaldo helped Real Madrid win multiple major honours, including four UEFA Champions League titles. His subsequent spell at Juventus brought further domestic success before he returned to Manchester United and eventually joined Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
At international level, he captained Portugal to victory at the 2016 European Championship and the 2019 UEFA Nations League.
Those achievements have made him one of the most decorated and recognisable figures in modern football. Yet his current focus remains on adding to his scoring record and helping Al Nassr compete for honours.
Reaching 1,000 official goals would add another historic chapter to a career already defined by records.
Al Nassr’s title ambitions
Ronaldo’s latest goal also came at an important point in Al Nassr’s domestic campaign.
The victory over Al Faisaly lifted the club to 25 points, level with Al Qadsiah at the top of the Saudi Pro League standings at the time of the result. Al Hilal remained close behind with 24 points and a game in hand.
Al Nassr’s attacking options have helped sustain the club’s challenge, with João Félix, Sadio Mané and other members of the squad contributing to their performances.
Félix provided the delivery for Ronaldo’s goal against Al Faisaly, while Al-Hamdan and Ângelo also found the net. Their contributions ensured that Ronaldo’s milestone strike formed part of a winning performance rather than an isolated individual achievement.
The result also extended Al Nassr’s recent winning run and strengthened their position in the title race.
For Ronaldo, the immediate objective is to maintain his scoring form while helping his team collect points. Every goal now brings him closer to the 1,000 mark.
What comes next for Ronaldo?
With 18 goals remaining, attention will turn to how quickly Ronaldo can reach the milestone.
His scoring rate, fitness, availability and Al Nassr’s fixture schedule will all influence the timeline. No precise date can be guaranteed, but his latest goal has moved him another step closer.
The 1,000-goal target has also remained part of his stated ambitions. In September, Ronaldo spoke about wanting to reach the landmark while continuing to compete for Portugal, describing the achievement as an additional reward rather than the sole purpose of his career.
At 41, he continues to combine his pursuit of individual records with club and international responsibilities.
The milestone is based on official senior goals for club and country, rather than exhibition matches or unofficial appearances. As with other career totals in football, the precise count depends on the matches and goals included in the statistical record.
For now, the verified tally following the Al Faisaly match stands at 982.
Ronaldo is 18 goals away from 1,000, and his latest header has brought one of football’s most ambitious individual targets closer to reality. The next chapter of the chase will unfold with Al Nassr, as the Portuguese star continues to add to a goalscoring record accumulated over more than two decades.
