Love the latest argyle sweater trend? Here’s our pick of the best styles to buy now, alongside expert advice on how to style them, according to fashion insiders.
Autumn is my absolute favourite time of year. I love the early morning frost, the way the leaves turn rich shades of yellow and orange, the binge-worthy stack of TV listings and the soft rumblings of the festive season beginning. Perhaps most of all, though, I love the fact that the weather lends itself perfectly to my most humble wardrobe staple: the sweater.
Gone are the hot summer days when I’m pulling my hair out trying to find something equally chic and cool to wear. In autumn, I can layer to my heart’s content. And while I love reacquainting myself with my trusted, well-worn cable knits, there’s one trend I can’t wait to invest in this season: the argyle sweater.
Defined by their overlapping diamond patterns, argyle knits are the perfect way to throw on an extra layer that feels both polished and fresh, textured yet luxurious. And thanks to the pattern’s Scottish roots, I wouldn’t be surprised if Claudia Winkleman debuts a few on The Celebrity Traitors this season.
“A hero item from the major heritage trend that we saw on the international catwalks for autumn winter, argyle knits are all over the high street and are a great way to add interest to your dark autumn staples,” says Kitty McGee, Stylist’s executive fashion and beauty director. “Collared cardigans like this Jigsaw style (below) look great with straight-leg jeans, ribbed socks and loafers.”

For Stylist fashion director Lucy Reber, it’s the colourful range over at TBCo that’s caught her eye. “I just adore the colour mix of this argyle knit from TBCo’s new knitwear range. They have loads of gorgeous styles, but this pink and fig colourway is so gorgeous. I would style it with a white cotton skirt and Mary Jane trainers for a cute, off-duty style.”

Instead of leaning into the countryside vibe, freelance fashion editor Harriet Davey loves the look of an argyle jumper worn with more structured pieces. “I’ll be getting this Cos V-neck version in a size up, layering over a white T-shirt and adding pleated trousers and ruched loafers. When it comes to winter, I’ll be completing the look with a longline to-the-floor coat.”
