A 52-year-old fish farm owner died today (16 October) after a group of people allegedly tied him to a tree, beat him and hacked him over suspicions that he had stolen fish from a fish enclosure in Satkhira's Tala upazila.
The victim, Khitish Mondal, son of the late Manindra Nath Mondal, was from Jeala village in Tala Sadar.
Tala Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohsin Ali confirmed the incident, saying Khitish had been beaten to death over suspicions of fish theft.
His cousin, Partho Mondal, said Khitish was detained by the attackers around 3 a.m. on suspicion of stealing fish from a pond owned by Biswanath Ghosh in the Jeala Uttar Khola Beel area.
Partho alleged that at least 10-15 people tied Khitish to a tree near the Jeala cremation ground and beat him, breaking his hands and legs and hacking his head.
They also tried to gouge out his eyes, he said.
The assault continued from around 3am until dawn, Partho added.
With help from locals, Khitish was rescued around 8am and taken to Tala Upazila Health Complex, where he died around noon.
"He was a fish farm owner and had a four-bigha fish farm. How can someone be beaten to death like this over suspicion of theft?" Partho said.
OC Mohsin said police were preparing an inquest report before sending the body for an autopsy and that legal action would be taken.
