Thai police uncover 7kg of suspected heroin packed into instant drink sachets for Australia. The senders remain unidentified. Meanwhile, officers seize 2.56 million yaba tablets and firearms in Ratchaburi, arresting two suspects in another operation.
Thai narcotics police have intercepted 7kg of suspected heroin bound for Australia, hidden inside instant drink sachets at a Samut Prakan courier depot. Police Major General Wittat Borirak led the operation, but the traffickers remain at large. Meanwhile, a separate Ratchaburi crackdown netted 2.56 million yaba tablets, firearms and two arrests. The heroin seizure follows an earlier 24kg trafficking case targeting Australia and Taiwan, plus a separate Thai flight attendant drug investigation. However, police have established no links between the cases as the hunt for the latest shipment’s senders and Australian recipients intensifies.
Thai narcotics police have smashed an attempted heroin shipment to Australia, intercepting seven kilogrammes hidden inside ordinary instant drink sachets. The discovery followed a raid on suspicious parcels at a private courier facility in Samut Prakan.
Officers found the drugs concealed inside silver foil after noticing unusually hard drink packets. Meanwhile, a separate Ratchaburi operation netted 2.56 million methamphetamine tablets, two suspects and firearms. Both seizures were announced on Sunday, October 18, as police hunted those behind the trafficking operations.
The Australian-bound heroin shipment was intercepted following intelligence received by the Narcotics Suppression Bureau. Officers had been alerted to suspicious parcels at a private courier company in Samut Prakan, southeast of Bangkok.
Police intelligence leads to Australia-bound parcels as senior narcotics officers inspect courier facility
Acting on the information, investigators from the bureau’s intelligence division inspected the premises. Their attention quickly turned to two cardboard boxes carrying Thai sender details and Australian delivery addresses.
The operation was led by Police Major General Wittat Borirak, commander of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau’s intelligence division. Police Lieutenant Colonel Chukiat Tonkaew, acting superintendent of Subdivision 1, accompanied him during the inspection.
The operation came under the overall command of National Police Commissioner Police General Samran Nuanma. In addition, Narcotics Suppression Bureau Commissioner Police Lieutenant General Phumin Phumphuangmuang oversaw the wider operation.
Initially, the two parcels appeared to contain nothing more than ordinary consumer products. Inside, officers found several brands of powdered instant drinks packed in individual sachets. However, closer inspection revealed something suspicious. The packets felt considerably harder than expected, prompting investigators to examine their contents.
Drink sachets conceal 7.003 kilogrammes of suspected heroin as chemical test exposes the powder
Officers opened the drink sachets and uncovered silver foil wrapping concealed inside the commercial packaging. Within the foil, they discovered quantities of white powder. The discovery immediately prompted a preliminary narcotics examination using Marquis reagent. The chemical turned purple during testing, indicating the possible presence of heroin.
Investigators subsequently weighed the suspected drugs and recorded a total of 7.003 kilogrammes. Heroin is classified as a Category 1 narcotic under Thai law. Consequently, police seized the entire consignment and transferred the evidence to Narcotics Suppression Bureau investigators. The published reports did not detail any subsequent laboratory confirmation of the preliminary test.
The interception stopped the identified shipment before it could leave Thailand for Australia. Yet the people responsible for preparing and dispatching the parcels remain unidentified.
Police are now tracing the senders and other individuals suspected of involvement in the attempted international shipment. As of Monday, October 19, no arrests had been announced in connection with the heroin seizure.
Police hunt unidentified senders and Australian recipients after heroin seizure in Samut Prakan
Crucially, both packages carried sender information originating in Thailand and delivery addresses in Australia. However, investigators have not disclosed the identities appearing on the parcels.
Nor have police confirmed whether the sender details identify those who actually prepared or dispatched the drugs. The intended Australian recipients also remain unknown in public reporting.
Further questions surround the destination and handling of the intercepted packages. Police have not identified the Australian city where the parcels were supposed to arrive. Likewise, the private courier company involved has not been named. Investigators have also withheld any estimated Australian street value for the seized heroin.
The inquiry now centres on establishing who prepared the sachets and arranged their international delivery. Officers must also identify the intended recipients and determine whether the sender information was genuine. Meanwhile, shipment records and any available CCTV footage could assist the investigation. Nevertheless, police have not disclosed what additional evidence has been recovered from the courier premises.
Unanswered questions over preparation of drug parcels as separate Ratchaburi yaba seizure is announced
The location where the suspected heroin was concealed inside the drink packets remains undisclosed. Investigators have not established publicly whether the parcels were prepared in Samut Prakan or elsewhere.
Similarly, no corresponding investigation by Australian police has been confirmed. The two intercepted boxes remain the only shipments publicly identified in connection with the October 18 operation.
Police Major General Wittat was the senior officer directly associated with the inspection and seizure. Following the interception, the evidence was transferred to Narcotics Suppression Bureau investigators for criminal proceedings. However, police have not separately identified the officer appointed to lead the subsequent inquiry. Investigators are continuing efforts to identify the people behind the Australian-bound consignment.
Separately, police announced another major narcotics seizure following an operation in Ratchaburi province. Officers arrested two Thai nationals and confiscated 2,566,000 methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as yaba.
The operation also uncovered firearms, ammunition and three mobile telephones. The reported value of the seized property and evidence reached approximately ฿5,360,700.
Police track Isuzu pickup across Thailand before arresting driver and finding 1.5 million yaba pills
The suspects were identified as Sitthidet Namphuang, 26, and Thidarat Phromyu, 30. Their arrests followed surveillance by investigators from Narcotics Suppression Division 3. Officers had been monitoring a silver Isuzu pickup suspected of transporting illegal drugs from central Thailand towards the South. The investigation subsequently developed into an operation spanning several provinces.
Police traced the pickup travelling from Ban Pong district in Ratchaburi towards Ayutthaya, Ang Thong and Suphan Buri. Investigators suspected the vehicle was collecting narcotics consignments during its journey.
Accordingly, officers continued monitoring its movements as it returned towards Ratchaburi. The surveillance eventually led police back to Ban Pong district.
Investigators intercepted the pickup and arrested its driver, 26-year-old Sitthidet Namphuang. A search uncovered six sacks in the rear of the vehicle. Inside, officers discovered approximately 1.5 million methamphetamine tablets. The seizure immediately prompted police to extend the operation to a residence in the same district.
House search brings second arrest and another million yaba tablets as firearms and ammunition are seized
Officers subsequently searched a house in Suan Kluai subdistrict of Ban Pong. There, investigators arrested 30-year-old Thidarat Phromyu and discovered another six sacks containing suspected narcotics.
The second consignment contained approximately 1,066,000 methamphetamine tablets. Together, the two seizures amounted to 2,566,000 pills recovered from the vehicle and residence.
Police also recovered an 11mm handgun and a 9mm long gun. Furthermore, investigators confiscated 29 rounds of 11mm ammunition and two rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. Three mobile telephones were seized as additional evidence. The total reported value of the confiscated property and evidence was ฿5,360,700.
Both suspects were transferred to investigators for legal proceedings following their arrests. In parallel, police continued efforts to identify other people suspected of involvement in the distribution network. Investigators are examining the pickup’s movements and the suspected collection of drugs across central Thailand. No additional arrests were reported in the supplied accounts.
Senior narcotics officers direct Ratchaburi arrests with no confirmed link to Australian heroin case
The Ratchaburi operation was conducted under Police Major General Phumiphat Phatthasriwongchai, commander of Narcotics Suppression Division 3. Police Colonel Wasu Chueaphut was also among the senior officers directing the investigation.
Their officers conducted the surveillance, intercepted the pickup and searched the Ban Pong residence. The two arrests followed the recovery of substantial methamphetamine consignments at both locations.
Notably, police have not established any connection between the Ratchaburi suspects and the heroin shipment destined for Australia. The operations involved different suspected trafficking activities and separate investigative teams. Nevertheless, both seizures were announced on October 18 by the Narcotics Suppression Bureau. One concerned an attempted international heroin shipment, while the other involved suspected domestic methamphetamine distribution.
The Australian-bound heroin interception follows several earlier investigations into international trafficking operations involving Thailand during 2026. In July, Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation disclosed a case involving 24 kilogrammes of heroin. The drugs had been concealed inside clothing and consumer products intended for overseas delivery. Australia and Taiwan were identified as the destinations.
Earlier courier trafficking inquiry uncovered 24 kilogrammes of heroin destined for Australia and Taiwan
That investigation concerned a suspected international trafficking network using courier companies to move narcotics. DSI officers subsequently arrested a 43-year-old Thai man and his 42-year-old Laotian wife.
According to investigators, the network had received instructions from an individual based in Laos. The inquiry was registered as Department of Special Investigation Special Case No. 99/2569.
The July operation involved a substantially larger heroin consignment than the latest seizure. Investigators identified 24 kilogrammes concealed among commercial products. By comparison, the October 18 interception involved 7.003 kilogrammes hidden inside powdered drink sachets. However, no confirmed connection has emerged between the two investigations.
Both cases concerned suspected narcotics concealed within ordinary consumer goods intended for international shipment. Even so, investigators have not established that the same individuals or organisations were responsible. The earlier operation was handled by the Department of Special Investigation. By contrast, the latest interception was conducted by the Narcotics Suppression Bureau’s intelligence division.
Thai flight attendant heroin case and Phayao intermediary arrest remain separate from latest seizure
On another front, a separate investigation during 2026 concerned a Thai flight attendant accused of transporting heroin to Australia. Police subsequently arrested a suspected intermediary in Phayao province in northern Thailand.
Investigators said the man had arranged for a bag containing heroin to be transported through other couriers. The case involved a different suspected method of moving narcotics internationally.
Police Major General Theeradej Thamsuthee, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, confirmed the intermediary’s arrest in July. However, investigators have not linked that case to the latest seizure in Samut Prakan. No connection has been established with the separate DSI investigation involving 24 kilogrammes of heroin. The three cases therefore remain distinct criminal inquiries.
The earlier investigations establish that Thai police have examined several suspected heroin trafficking operations involving Australia during 2026. One concerned drugs concealed inside clothing and consumer goods. Another involved a flight attendant and a suspected intermediary arranging the movement of a bag. The latest case centres on heroin hidden inside instant drink sachets.
Investigators trace disguised heroin parcels but senders and Australian recipients remain unidentified
In the October 18 operation, investigators identified two cardboard boxes addressed to Australia before examining their contents. At first, the packages appeared to contain commercially packaged powdered drinks. However, the unusually hard sachets prompted officers to open them. The discovery of silver foil wrapping subsequently exposed the suspected heroin concealed inside.
Police then conducted the preliminary Marquis reagent test, which produced a purple reaction. The result indicated the possible presence of heroin, prompting officers to seize the 7.003 kilogram consignment. Subsequently, the evidence was transferred to Narcotics Suppression Bureau investigators. The parcels’ Australian delivery addresses became a central element of the criminal inquiry.
Yet investigators have not publicly identified who physically delivered the packages to the courier company. Nor have they disclosed where the sachets were prepared or filled with the suspected narcotics. The identities of those who arranged the international delivery also remain unknown. Furthermore, police have not confirmed whether any Australian recipients have been identified.
The private courier company’s records could establish details concerning the booking and dispatch of the parcels. Any available surveillance footage could also help identify individuals involved in handling the packages. Nevertheless, police have not announced what evidence has been obtained beyond the seized parcels and their contents. The company itself remains unidentified in the published reports.
Ratchaburi drug suspects face proceedings while police pursue others and heroin inquiry remains unresolved
Meanwhile, the Ratchaburi investigation continues following the arrests of Sitthidet Namphuang and Thidarat Phromyu. Police recovered approximately 1.5 million methamphetamine tablets from the intercepted pickup.
A subsequent residential search produced another 1,066,000 tablets. Officers also confiscated two firearms, ammunition and three mobile telephones.
Investigators are continuing efforts to identify other members of the suspected distribution network. However, the available reports do not identify additional suspects or establish the full extent of the operation. The two arrested individuals have been handed over for criminal proceedings. Their case remains separate from the international heroin investigation.
Freed 28-year-old Thai woman returns to Bangkok and meets Narcotics Suppression Bureau officers
For the Australian-bound shipment, Police Major General Wittat Borirak led the interception at the Samut Prakan courier facility. Police Lieutenant Colonel Chukiat Tonkaew accompanied him during the operation. Meanwhile, the seized evidence has been passed to Narcotics Suppression Bureau investigators pursuing those responsible.
The next developments depend on identifying the people behind the two parcels and their intended Australian recipients. Police have not confirmed any arrests, additional shipments or linked overseas investigation. As of October 19, the suspected heroin consignors remained unidentified in public reporting. The 7.003 kilogrammes of suspected heroin remain in police custody as the criminal inquiry continues.
