The Senate has passed a bill seeking to establish a Federal College of Agriculture in Shani Local Government Area of Borno State.
The bill was passed for a third reading during plenary on Thursday after the Senate considered a report presented by its Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions.
The sponsor of the bill, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, said the proposed institution would promote agricultural education and improve farming practices in the area and across the country.
Ndume said the college would help farmers move away from traditional farming methods and adopt modern technologies to increase productivity.
“The college will help farmers acquire modern agricultural knowledge, adopt improved farming techniques and gain access to better crop varieties.
“Shani, in Borno South, is known for the cultivation of rice, tomatoes and onions. The area also shares boundaries with Adamawa and Bauchi states, which are important agricultural zones,” he said.
The senator described the passage of the bill as a major achievement, particularly as the current legislative session approaches its end.
