Imphal, Oct 16: Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM), the apex body of the Thadou community, has urged Thadou people to register through its official website, asserting that the community is distinct from the Kuki identity and must be separately represented in peace initiatives in Manipur.
In a media release, TIM criticised the state government led by Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh for allegedly using “Kuki” or “Kuki-Zo” as an umbrella term for the state’s 12 non-Naga Zo tribes while engaging separately with Zomi, Hmar and other organisations.
The organisation alleged that the government’s outreach to Kuki, Zomi, Hmar and other representatives had overlooked the Thadou community and its representative body. It accused the government of lacking clarity over the term “Kuki” and claimed that its approach risked treating Thadou people as part of a political ideology they did not endorse.
TIM also rejected the representative status of the Kuki Zo Council (KZC) and Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), alleging that the organisations promote Kuki-supremacist politics and serve as mouthpieces for Kuki militant groups. These allegations were made by TIM in its statement.
The organisation maintained that Thadou people are distinct from the Kuki, Zomi, Hmar and Mizo communities, which it said have their own representative bodies.
TIM cited a joint covenant of community understanding signed with the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), the Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) and Arambai Tenggol on August 6, 2025, in Imphal. According to TIM, the agreement was aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence between the Thadou and Meitei communities and should be recognised and strengthened.
The organisation said it had received reports of Thadou individuals travelling to Imphal for transit and medical treatment without its knowledge or coordination. It said all Thadou people should follow its standard operating procedure, including mandatory registration through its website, thadou.com.
TIM further stated that it would consider the movement of unregistered Thadou individuals unauthorised and would not accept responsibility for their conduct or movements.
The organisation also distanced itself from Thadou individuals advocating a Union Territory or separate administration under the Kuki or Kuki-Zo identity, claiming that they did not represent the community or TIM.
