Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev plays qualifier Dalibor Svrcina later on Monday. The winner meets Tsitsipas in the Shanghai Masters last 16.
How the opening set slipped away
Tsitsipas levelled at 1-1 with a love game. In a 20-point fourth game, he saved five break points after leading 40-0 and held for 2-2.
He held to love for 3-3. However, Fritz converted his fourth break point of an 18-point eighth game, his ninth of the match, to lead 5-3.
The American then served out the set 6-3.
Comeback to the Shanghai Masters last 16
Tsitsipas recovered from 0-30 at the start of the second set. Two aces and two unforced errors from Fritz gave him a 1-0 lead.
He came back from 0-30 again in the third game to lead 2-1. Both players then held serve to love from 2-2 until Tsitsipas led 6-5.
In the 12th game, Tsitsipas broke Fritz on his second set point to take the set 7-5. He won the deciding set 6-3, ATP Tour results show.
His run to the Shanghai Masters last 16 began with a milestone. The win over Darderi on Saturday was his 400th at tour level, the ATP said.
Tsitsipas, 28, is the world No. 43, the ATP said. By comparison, Fritz sits 12th in the race for the ATP Finals in Turin.
Shanghai also gave him his first tour-level win, against Karen Khachanov in 2017. Since then, he has won 13 titles, including the 2019 ATP Finals, according to the ATP.
