Finding files on Windows is no longer much of a challenge, thanks to tools like Everything. But I've realized that a good search tool can do more than return results quickly. The way it fits into my daily workflow matters just as much. That's what caught my attention about Listary. Instead of treating file search as a separate task, it brings some useful shortcuts and navigation features into the picture. I've been exploring how it compares with Everything, and there's a good reason why I think it's worth a closer look, even if you already have a favorite search tool.
Everything is great at finding files
But searching isn't the whole story
Everything has been my go-to option whenever I need to find a file on Windows without wasting time digging through folders. What I like most about it is how quickly it returns results. I can start typing a filename, and relevant matches appear almost instantly. It doesn't matter whether I'm looking for an old screenshot, a document I downloaded weeks ago, or an installer buried somewhere on my drive.
What makes Everything so useful is its simplicity. It focuses on doing one job well instead of overwhelming me with unnecessary features. Its search results are straightforward, and I can narrow them down using filters when I need something more specific. Once I get used to its speed, going back to the default Windows search feels frustrating. However, finding files quickly isn't always enough for my workflow. Sometimes, I want something that makes the entire process more convenient.
Listary makes finding and accessing files feel effortless
It makes keyboard-driven navigation feel natural
The best thing about Listary is how naturally it fits into my regular Windows workflow. Instead of relying on a separate search window every time, I can bring up its search interface with a keyboard shortcut and start typing. I don't have to interrupt what I'm doing just to locate a file or folder.
The Quick Switch feature is particularly useful. When I'm already browsing a folder in File Explorer, I can use Listary to jump to another location without manually navigating through multiple directories. This comes in handy when I'm working with project files scattered across different drives or folders.
I also like that I can keep my hands on the keyboard for most of these actions. Once I get familiar with the shortcuts, moving between locations feels much more natural than clicking through folder after folder. It's a small change, but it makes a noticeable difference when I'm repeating the same tasks throughout the day. Listary doesn't make file searching itself revolutionary. Instead, it removes some of the friction around accessing files, which is what makes it appealing to me.
More than a file search tool
It also works as an app launcher and command tool
Another thing I like about Listary is that it can do more than locate files and folders. I can use it to launch applications, search for specific settings, and access different parts of my system without relying on the Start menu for everything. This makes it a handy utility to keep running in the background.
I also found its search actions useful when I wanted to do something with a result rather than simply open it. Depending on the item, I can access options through Listary's context menu instead of navigating elsewhere to find them. It supports custom commands, too, which gives me room to tailor the tool to my workflow.
Listary also lets me configure keyboard shortcuts and adjust its behavior to suit my preferences. I like having these options because I can keep the features I use regularly close at hand without making the interface feel cluttered.
These additions aren't necessarily reasons to abandon every other Windows utility. However, they make Listary feel like a practical everyday tool rather than just another search application.
Listary still has room to improve
Useful features, but room for polish
While I enjoyed using Listary, I wouldn't say it's perfect. The first thing I noticed was that it takes time to get comfortable with its features. There are several settings, shortcuts, and customization options to explore, and figuring out which ones actually fit my workflow requires a bit of experimentation. I'd have preferred a slightly simpler starting experience.
Another consideration is that Listary's usefulness depends on how you work. If you rarely deal with deeply nested folders or frequently switch between file locations, you might not notice enough of a difference to justify adding another utility to your system. These aren't deal-breakers for me, but they're worth considering.
The best file search tool does more than find files
For me, Listary stands out because it changes how I interact with files on Windows. Everything remains an excellent choice for fast, focused searches, but Listary offers a different kind of convenience that fits naturally into my daily workflow. I don't think everyone needs to switch, especially if Everything already does everything they need. But if you want to spend less time navigating Windows and more time getting things done, Listary is worth a try.
