Pros
- Hydrates, firms, and brightens dull skin
- Dye-free so it shouldn't irritate sensitive skin
- Fantastic price
Cons
- Skip if you need unscented products
You don't have to splurge to experience visible anti-aging results. Costing just under $25, this iconic red jar is packed with moisturizing heavy hitters, like hyaluronic acid and shea butter to ensure dryness is a thing of the past.
Underwood has been a long-term, on-again, off-again tester of this cream for years. As our beauty director, Underwood tests a slew of moisturizers, but he always comes back to Olay because it's legit. "I like it because it's rich without being too greasy and a little goes a long way," he says. And the results speak for themselves: “My skin always feels more hydrated, plumper, and firmer after I use this cream for a few weeks."
Beyond quenching parched skin, Olay is infused with niacinamide to speed up skin cell turnover, which leaves the complexion looking glowy and even-toned. It also contains antioxidants to protect against free radical damage caused by sun exposure, smoke, and air pollution that can weaken collagen and cause wrinkles.
Keep in mind that the scent is quite noticeable, so if you have a sensitive nose, this might not be a good fit. "Otherwise, you can't really beat a cream that delivers the same results as a prestige formula at a sixth of the price," says Underwood.

Pros
- My skin felt more hydrated within 48 hours
- Safe for sensitive skin, including eczema
Cons
- Hard to blend if you use a thick layer
Normally, I’d roll my eyes at anyone suggesting a $40 product as a “best value” pick, but Avène is hands down the best investment I’ve made in my skincare routine.
This multipurpose power hitter can be used in 40-plus ways, including as a supremely hydrating face moisturizer for mature skin. It also works as a face mask, makeup primer, and hand cream. I’ve even slathered it on as a body cream when I forgot to pack one for a weekend trip to Belmond Cap Juluca in Anguilla.
Avène’s copper-zinc sulfate complex provides skin barrier support and protects from external irritants. It also contains hydrating beeswax and C+ Restore, a patented postbiotic ingredient in the brand’s signature thermal water, which boosts moisture. Despite its thicker texture, the fragrance-free and noncomedogenic formula won’t clog pores or cause pimples, says dermatologist Marissa Garshick, MD.
Hailey Bieber helped Cicalfate+ go viral, but I’ve been a fan of this cream for over a year. It’s a fantastic post-sun skin treatment, like after swimming or hiking.

Pros
- Oil-free and non-comedogenic
- Provides weightless hydration
Cons
- Skip if you don't like cooling products
This beloved face moisturizer earned a casual 4.6/5-star average from nearly 88,240 Amazon reviews. Neutrogena is intensely hydrating but has a lightweight gel texture that doesn't leave a sticky residue or greasy finish, making it ideal for oily skin types. The noncomedogenic and oil-free formulation also won't clog pores, meaning Hydro Boost is practical for women dealing with adult acne, like during menopause.
Hydro Boost combines derm-loved hyaluronic acid and glycerin for ample hydration. Notably, hyaluronic acid minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, leaving your face more volumized and taut. Given the acne-safe ingredients and affordable price tag, it's also a helpful moisturizer for any teens in your life who could use help curating their routine.
When applied, it has a light cooling sensation that feels refreshing, but if that’s not your vibe then this likely isn’t the moisturizer for you.

Pros
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30 coverage
- Fragrance-free
Cons
- Women with very dry skin will need extra hydration
Like Dr. Camp previously mentioned, all we need is a cleanser, moisturizer for mature skin, and sunscreen. La Roche-Posay combines the hydration of a moisturizer with the broad-spectrum coverage of a facial sunscreen into a single product. He also appreciates that this daily moisturizer contains prebiotic thermal water (from where else, but La Roche-Posay, France?), ceramides, niacinamide, and glycerin to hydrate skin and restore the skin's natural protective barrier. Notably, the prebiotic thermal water is naturally rich in antioxidants and helps soothe sensitive and irritated skin.
I've been using this 2-in-1 item for a month and love that it's free of ingredients that clog my pores. Admittedly, I was nervous the SPF would leave behind an embarrassing white cast, but the active ingredients—avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, and octocrylene—blend into my caramel complexion like a dream. Plus, the SPF 30 coverage is aligned with guidance from the American Academy of Dermatology.
Honestly, the only real downside with this day cream is that women with dry skin will need something richer. But the lotion-like consistency is perfect for someone dealing with adult acne or having oily skin like myself.

Underwood has been loyal to the classic Advanced Night Repair Serum for nearly a decade, and when the brand expanded the collection to include a face cream, he was thrilled. He describes its texture as balm-like and solid to the touch, but once Underwood warms up the formula with his fingers, it melts into his skin beautifully.
"The feeling it leaves behind is moisturizing, and it almost has an instant tightening-like effect," says Underwood. "I love how glowing and hydrated my complexion is the morning after I wake up from using this product. The texture is wonderful—just a joy to use.”

Pros
- Supports skin barrier function
- Silky texture
Cons
- Some reviewers aren’t keen on the smell, but that’s a non-issue for Underwood
Dr. Camp recommends this deeply hydrating face cream for mature skin because it combines plant-derived ceramides with cloudberry, a source of vitamins A, C, and E. Most impressively, blending ceramides and skullcap, a flowering plant in the mint family, helps soothe an irritated skin barrier and boost moisture retention.
Although Underwood doesn't have dry skin, this cream is his go-to when his cheeks feel dry. "It's a really beautiful, rich formula that leaves skin supremely hydrated and supple without leaving behind even a hint of stickiness," he says. The velvety texture feels great on the skin, absorbs relatively quickly, and leaves behind a satin-like glow on your face. Talk about a beauty triple threat!

A bonus: Ursa Major contains natural ingredients, so if clean beauty is your thing, you'll like this one a lot, says Underwood. The cream is also made with vegan and cruelty-free ingredients and is Certified Plastic Negative to help promote a more sustainable future.

Pros
- Safe for eczema
- Offers immediate hydration and in the long-term it relaxes wrinkles
Cons
- The glass container is more eco-friendly, but not helpful if you're clumsy
Caring for sensitive skin doesn't have to be complicated. This ultra-gentle face moisturizer combines soothing ghostberry and anti-inflammatory Tasmanian pepperberry to help calm irritated skin. It's enriched with a blend of wrinkle-smoothing peptides and five ceramides to lock in hydration and support the skin's natural protective barrier.
No wonder it earned a National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance and a spot in our tightly edited routines. I reach for this one when I need to tackle dryness and fine lines without the irritation. After a month of twice daily use, I noticed my fine lines were less visible and my skin felt bouncier.
Its light consistency gives your skin a nice moisture boost without any stickiness. Alphyn also imparts a dewy effect, meaning you can skip buying a pricey glow-enhancing face primer and streamline your makeup routine.

Pros
- Velvety and creamy consistency
- Absorbs relatively quickly
Cons
- Skip if you don't like face products that have light floral and citrus scents
Clean beauty lovers will also appreciate that True Botanicals is made with certified, nontoxic ingredients, like carotenoid oils, to nourish and improve elasticity and uneven skin tone. For example, illipe butter is rich in vitamins A and E, and leaves your face moisturized and plump. "It was developed by one of the original clean beauty brands, so you can rest assured that it was formulated to the highest standards, with no potentially harsh or harmful ingredients," Underwood says.
Retinol is a tried-and-true line-smoothing ingredient, but it can irritate some women. The heavy-hitter ingredient is a vitamin A derivative that goes through a retinization process for a quicker cell turnover that leads to dryness, flaking, and redness. To prevent this, you can use the sandwich method where you layer a moisturizer, your retinol, and a final coating of moisturizer.
It also requires starting slowly—once or twice a week, then gradually upping the frequency after your skin can tolerate retinol. That's why Underwood is a huge fan of this clean, retinol alternative moisturizer for mature skin. True Botanicals uses peptilium, a proprietary peptide cranberry extract, to fade wrinkles without making skin sensitized, says Underwood. The plant-based face cream also helps brighten dull skin without any annoying flakes, itching, tingling, or redness associated with retinol.

Pros
- Compatible with all skin types
- Layers beautifully over serums and under sunscreen
Cons
- Skip if you prefer a thicker face cream
iS Clinical has quickly become my go-to skincare brand. I recently named the Cleansing Complex one of the best face washes of 2026, and its lineup of face serums and Reparative Moisture Emulsion are now staples in my fall routine.
Here’s why: Its standout ingredients include skin-plumping hyaluronic acid and copper tripeptide-1, which helps visibly reduce my expression lines overtime. During my month-long testing window, I noticed that my 11 and smile lines are more refined—a major win since I’m avoiding Botox for as long as possible. This moisturizer is also packed with a proprietary combination of enzymes to help protect my complexion from environmental stressors and photodamage.
I’ve tried this moisturizer on its own and layered with various serums, sunscreens, and foundations in my collection, and it doesn’t pill or feel tacky. It also helps that I get dermaplaning facials with Brittany Blancato, an esthetician and founder of Skinlikeb Studio in New York. Dermaplaning removes dead skin cells and vellus hairs, allowing my moisturizer to soak into my skin. Genius!
TBH, there it’s genuinely hard for me to pinpoint a con with this moisturizer. I’m a big fan of the silky, almost gel-cream texture that’s ideal for my acne-prone, oily skin. However, if you have very dry skin, you might prefer a richer consistency. FWIW, the radiator in my apartment building already kicked on and this cream helps lock in moisture.
