No. 6 Alabama will face No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday in a top-15 showdown. The Crimson Tide must win without star receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams, who is dealing with knee and head issues. According to Yahoo Sports, DeBoer says Coleman-Williams has a “pretty good chance” of missing the game and could be out for weeks. Tennessee holds a 5-1 record while Alabama sits at 5-1 after a narrow loss to Georgia. Both teams need a win to stay in the hunt for the SEC title.
The matchup features two teams that have dealt with recent struggles. Alabama lost 20-17 to Georgia at home in Week 6, while Tennessee has climbed the rankings after beating weaker opponents. Fans in Tuscaloosa are nervous about their coaching staff, but writer Dan Wolken says the evidence points to Kalen DeBoer staying long-term. The game takes place at Neyland Stadium, where the home crowd will be loud and the pressure high for both sides.
Alabama loses a key weapon in the passing game
The biggest story for the Crimson Tide is the absence of Ryan Coleman-Williams. In six games this season, he accumulated 415 receiving yards and four touchdowns. DeBoer confirmed on Monday that the receiver has a knee injury and a head issue that need attention. “Has got a couple things going on,” DeBoer said. The coach added that the team will address the lower extremity issue this week but likely will not have him for the weekend.
Without Coleman-Williams, Alabama’s offense must find new ways to move the ball. The receiver was one of the best options for the quarterback to target in tight spots. Losing him forces other players to step up immediately against a Tennessee defense that plays well at home. This injury changes the game plan and could slow down the passing attack significantly. The team has to work through this week to see if he can return for future games.
DeBoer also noted that the receiver might be “week-to-week” after this weekend. This means the team cannot count on him returning for the next few games either. The coaching staff must adjust their strategy to account for this loss. The depth chart will be tested, and young players will get more snaps than expected.
Tennessee holds the advantage with home crowd support
Tennessee enters the game with a 5-1 record and will host Alabama in Neyland Stadium, which is one of the toughest places to play in college football. The home team usually benefits from the noise and energy of the crowd. This factor could help the Volunteers make big plays on both sides of the ball.
Alabama, on the other hand, is coming off a loss to Georgia that dropped them to No. 6 in the rankings. The Crimson Tide were close to winning that game but fell short 20-17. Now they face a tough road test against a team that is confident and playing at home. The mood in Tuscaloosa is mixed, with some fans questioning the coaching staff. However, Wolken argues that DeBoer is the right choice for the long haul and that fans should accept it.
The coaching situation matters more than one game
Many Alabama fans want to move on from Kalen DeBoer because he is not Nick Saban. They feel he has not had great success yet and want a change. However, the evidence suggests he is the right fit for the program. During his second season, DeBoer guided Alabama to the playoffs with an 11-4 record. Although they were defeated by Georgia in the SEC title game, Oklahoma lost to them in the first round.
Wolken wrote that Alabama’s leadership believes strongly in DeBoer and that he wants to stay for the long term. He remarked that no one realistically available for hire in college football could outperform Alabama’s current options. “It’s time for all Alabama fans and, frankly, the college football gossip machine to finally accept it: DeBoer and Alabama are a good match, and he’s not going anywhere anytime soon,” Wolken wrote. This is a reality check for fans who expect immediate perfection.
The loss to Georgia was close, and the team showed they can compete with the best. Now they face a rival team with a strong defense and a loud crowd. The coaching staff must prepare the team to handle the pressure of a big rivalry game. If they win, it proves the program is moving in the right direction. If they lose, it might fuel the criticism, but the long-term plan remains the same.
Three predictions for the Saturday showdown
First, Alabama will struggle to move the ball through the air without Coleman-Williams. The receiver’s absence will force the quarterback to check down more often or hold the ball too long. Tennessee’s defense will capitalize on these mistakes and create turnovers. The passing game will be limited, and the offense will rely too much on the running game.
Second, the home crowd at Neyland Stadium will play a major role in the outcome. The noise level will make it hard for Alabama to communicate on offense. Tennessee will use this to their advantage and score early. The crowd energy will keep the Volunteers in the game even if they fall behind.
Third, this will not change DeBoer’s standing in Tuscaloosa. Sure, a win will quiet the noise after the Georgia loss, but as Wolken pointed out, Alabama’s leadership firmly believes in DeBoer. A loss here would keep the critics and the media talking, but it will not drive him out. He is there to stay for the long haul.
