The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Afghanistan has called for urgent action to end child marriage and provide girls with opportunities for education, development and a safe life.
On Sunday, October 11, on the occasion of International Day of the Girl, UNICEF said that every girl has the right to receive an education, grow, develop her skills and have the opportunity to shape her future.
UNICEF stressed that child marriage cuts short the childhoods of many girls and deprives them of opportunities essential to their development and the formation of their futures.
Recognising the abilities and resilience of girls and their families around the world, the organisation called for urgent action to end this practice.
UNICEF said that child marriage could be prevented by investing in girls’ education, reforming laws and strengthening social support systems.
