Earlier this year, news leaked of Jordan Brand‘s plan to reissue Randy Moss’ signature shoe, the Jordan Super Freak. That isn’t all it will do as a throwback for the first NFL player to join its roster, as word has now emerged for a special-edition of the Air Jordan 9.
The Air Jordan 9 “Super Freak” will release next year with a colorway inspired by the Minnesota Vikings. A white leather base matches the midsole, while a black suede mudguard sweeps all the way to up the heel and around the collar. Vikings purple then arrives through the outsole and tongue.
In 1999, Moss joined Derek Jeter and Roy Jones Jr. as the first athletes outside of the NBA to sign with Jordan Brand. The Hall of Famer wore several different Air Jordans in NFL games, including a cleated Air Jordan 9, as well as his Super Freak that launched in 2000. This colorway, however, is original rather than a repeat of one Moss wore as a player.
Super Freak is a nickname first given to Moss when he was in high-school because of his outlandish athleticism, and the legendary wide receiver got involved in the design process for the shoe that featured small nubs tailored to the Astroturf the Vikings used to play home games on.
Speaking to Andscape in 2017 for a feature on the shoe, Moss said: “You still got guys out there wearing Jordans, but it started with me. I don’t know who it’s going to end with, but I am happy to say that I did start that trend.”
Now that NFL players are a fixture of Jordan Brand, its current roster includes Jalen Hurts, Dak Prescott, CJ Stroud, Bryce Young, Puka Nacua, Pat Surtain, Maxx Crosby and even Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton.
The Air Jordan 9 “Super Freak” will release in February 2027 during Super Bowl weekend. Pricing is set at $215.
