The United States Mission in Nigeria Wednesday issued a health advisory for American citizens residing in or travelling to the country.
The advisory follows a reported case of Bundibugyo virus disease, a rare and severe strain of Ebola.
In a statement published on its official X account , the U.S. Mission urged citizens and travellers to consult the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website for updated travel guidance on Ebola.
It stated further that individuals who suspect exposure or display signs of the virus were advised to seek immediate medical advice.
“If at risk for Ebola, alert your healthcare provider if you are experiencing symptoms consistent with Ebola to receive guidance prior to presenting for care,” the advisory stated.
It cautioned travellers to continue taking malaria prophylaxis as prescribed, warning that malaria symptoms can mimic those of Ebola and trigger unnecessary health alarms.
“Continue to take malaria prophylaxis as recommended by your doctor. “Symptoms of malaria can mimic symptoms of Ebola, leading to preventable health scares.”
Travellers returning from areas experiencing Ebola outbreaks were advised to monitor their health for 21 days.
The U.S. Embassy also encouraged citizens to review general health advice on its official Nigeria country portal, consult its list of medical providers, and check with travel insurance providers about medical evacuation options.
Nigeria confirmed one case of the disease on October 20, making it the fifth country to detect the virus since an outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on May 15, 2026
