The Raiders are finding out how narrow the road is between making progress and getting ahead of themselves.
Three straight wins suggested they might be further along than expected. Two straight losses have offered a reminder that the distance between an encouraging start and a sustainable operation remains considerable.
Now comes Buffalo, followed by the Rams, with the Raiders sitting squarely in the teeth of a schedule that leaves little room for wasted possessions, missed assignments or lapses in judgment.
There is a way through it.
But the Raiders must be honest about what that requires.
Very few NFL teams are good enough to beat themselves and their opponents on the same Sunday. Right now, the Raiders are nowhere near being one of them.
That is a reality to manage, not a reason to abandon the progress they have made.
And Sunday against the Bills at Allegiant Stadium offers an opportunity to show they understand the difference.
The temptation after a 3-0 start was to begin imagining where this season might lead. The more useful exercise now is remembering what made that start possible.
The Raiders gave themselves opportunities. They created takeaways, found timely answers and stayed engaged when games threatened to slip away. They showed enough resilience to overcome trouble without letting it consume them.
Those wins did not require perfection.
They required the Raiders to keep doing enough of the right things to give themselves a chance.
That is the blueprint they need to rediscover.
Because when a team is still building its roster, learning new systems and establishing its identity, the details carry extra weight. A penalty that an established contender might overcome can derail an entire possession. A missed assignment can expose more than one defender. A squandered scoring opportunity can become the beginning of a game getting away.
The Raiders experienced too much of that in New England.
Against Buffalo, they cannot afford a repeat.
Josh Allen presents enough problems without the Raiders creating additional ones for themselves. His ability to extend plays forces defenders to remain disciplined long after the original design has broken down. His running ability punishes defenders who lose track of him while accounting for everyone else.
The challenge is physical.
It is also a test of patience.
A pass rusher cannot become so consumed with reaching Allen that he gives him an escape route. A defensive back cannot assume his coverage responsibility ends because the quarterback has left the pocket. One defender trying to make the entire play can undo the work of the other 10.
For defensive coordinator Rob Leonard, the message should be straightforward: make Buffalo earn what it gets.
That does not mean playing passively. The Raiders need pressure. They need to challenge throws and pursue opportunities to take the ball away.
But aggression must come with accountability.
There is a difference between attacking an offense and helping it attack you.
Buffalo offers chances, too. The Bills committed nine turnovers over their previous three games after playing turnover-free football through their first two. For all their offensive firepower, they are capable of opening a door.
The Raiders have to be disciplined enough to recognize it and efficient enough to walk through.
That puts responsibility on an offense that cannot keep making every possession feel like an uphill climb.
The running game needs to provide manageable situations. Kirk Cousins needs to keep the offense on schedule. Brock Bowers cannot be the only player Buffalo has to worry about when the Raiders need a meaningful gain.
And when an opportunity presents itself, whether through favorable field position or a defensive takeaway, the offense needs to make it count.
Possessions against Allen are too valuable to treat casually.
Rebuilding is often discussed in terms of draft picks, salary cap space and the eventual arrival of enough talent. But it also involves establishing habits that remain dependable when the opponent gets better and the circumstances become uncomfortable.
Especially then.
Can the Raiders handle a Buffalo touchdown without responding as if they must erase it on the next snap? Can they recover from a failed possession without allowing frustration to follow them onto defense? Can they stay committed to their responsibilities when the game demands something difficult?
Those questions matter beyond Sunday.
Answering them well could also help the Raiders win Sunday.
This is not an argument for accepting defeat because Buffalo is further along. The Raiders should expect to compete, prepare to win and hold themselves accountable if they fall short.
But they cannot skip the steps required to become the team they want to be.
Their first three games showed what is possible when enough pieces work together. Their last two showed how quickly things can unravel when they do not.
Sunday offers another opportunity to establish which version becomes the standard.
The Raiders do not have to prove they have completed their rebuild.
They have to show they understand how to keep building.
