Morocco became Spain’s largest market for petroleum product exports in August 2026, as diesel shipments to the Kingdom surged 94% in a single month, according to data from Spain’s Strategic Petroleum Reserves Corporation (CORES).
Diesel deliveries rose from 83,000 tonnes in July to 161,000 tonnes in August, an increase of 78,000 tonnes and the highest monthly volume recorded so far this year.
Morocco consequently accounted for 24.2% of Spain’s total diesel exports of 666,000 tonnes, overtaking France, which received 108,000 tonnes, and Portugal, with 94,000 tonnes.
Overall Spanish petroleum product shipments to Morocco increased 50.6%, from 180,000 tonnes in July to 271,000 tonnes in August.
That represented nearly 16% of Spain’s total petroleum exports of 1.7 million tonnes, placing Morocco ahead of France and Portugal.
Diesel accounted for 59.4% of petroleum shipments to Morocco and contributed approximately 86% of the overall monthly increase.
Other shipments included 38,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas, 18,000 tonnes of gasoline and 12,000 tonnes of fuel oil.
Despite August’s sharp increase, cumulative Spanish petroleum exports to Morocco remained below their level during the corresponding period of 2025.
