The San Antonio Spurs are still searching for their first victory of the NBA season after another frustrating loss, this time against their in-state rivals.
Despite an improved performance from Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio fell 114-110 to the Houston Rockets on Friday night at Moody Center in Austin, Texas.
The game came down to a dramatic final possession, with Wembanyama attempting to bring the Spurs even in the closing seconds. However, Houston's Amen Thompson delivered the biggest defensive play of the night, blocking Wembanyama's shot near the basket to preserve the Rockets' narrow advantage.
Fred VanVleet followed with two free throws to seal the victory for Houston.
Wembanyama finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds, shooting 9 of 21 from the field. His performance represented a significant improvement from Tuesday's season-opening loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, when he scored just 12 points on 1 of 13 shooting.
But even with their superstar producing at a higher level, the Spurs couldn't find a way to finish the game.
San Antonio trailed by as many as 11 points before battling back to make things interesting in the fourth quarter.
The Spurs received contributions throughout their starting lineup, with rookie Dylan Harper scoring 20 points and De'Aaron Fox adding 19 points and nine assists.
Stephon Castle contributed 15 points and seven rebounds, but San Antonio struggled to consistently contain Houston's offensive attack.
Alperen Sengun led the Rockets with 29 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, while Kevin Durant and Thompson each added 20 points. Thompson also recorded 10 rebounds, but his most important contribution came on the defensive end when Houston needed one final stop.
The loss dropped San Antonio to 0-2 following its 116-104 defeat against Oklahoma City earlier in the week.
For a Spurs team entering the season with championship aspirations, the consecutive losses represent a disappointing start.
Still, Wembanyama's improved offensive performance provides some encouragement as San Antonio works to establish consistency.

The Spurs will have little time to dwell on Friday's defeat, with a road matchup against the Dallas Mavericks scheduled for Saturday.
After two losses against Western Conference opponents, San Antonio's next challenge is turning its improved individual performances into a complete team effort.
Wembanyama showed signs of finding his offensive rhythm against Houston. Now, the Spurs need that production to translate into their first win.
