The High Court has ordered a mother to forfeit a $50 000 bail bond after her son absconded during his trial for murdering his brother. The court convicted him in absentia last week.
Francina Layne, the surety for Jason Layne, appeared before Justice Carlisle Greaves in the No. 3 Supreme Court on Monday and was instructed to pay the full sum.
Senior Counsel Andrew Pilgrim represented her.
Last week, Layne, of Leadvale, Christ Church, was convicted in absentia of the shooting death of Anthony Bubba Layne on June 4, 2020.
After the 12-member jury had heard weeks of evidence, Layne, who was on bail, failed to return to the Supreme Court, and the trial proceeded in his absence.
He was found guilty after the jury deliberated for one hour following Justice Greaves’ summation.
An arrest warrant was issued for the convicted murderer, who authorities say left the island on October 4.
Justice Greaves has set sentencing for December 4.
Acting Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Krystal Delaney, acting Senior State Counsel Anastacia McMeo-Boyce and State Counsel Kwame Ramsay prosecuted the case, while Layne was represented by lawyers Lesley Cargill-Straker and Kristin Vanderpool.
