One person has died and three others were rescued after an uncompleted two-storey building collapsed in Lagos in the early hours of Friday.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement by its Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
According to LASEMA, the incident occurred at Akinola Street, by Fadeyi Bus Stop, off Ikorodu Road.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency received a distress call at 12:10 am, prompting immediate activation of its Cobra Response Team from Onipanu Base, which arrived at the scene at 12:12 am.
He said the building, which was under construction, collapsed with construction workers suspected to be trapped beneath the debris.
Search and rescue operations commenced immediately, with safety measures put in place for victims and responders.
Oke-Osanyintolu said groaning sounds were heard beneath the rubble, indicating possible survivors, and an excavator was deployed to facilitate the operation.
Three adult males were rescued alive and received immediate pre-hospital care from LASEMA paramedics and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being transferred to hospital.
The agency disclosed that one body was recovered from the rubble.
He said search and rescue operations were ongoing to determine whether more persons were trapped.
Emergency responders at the scene included the LASEMA Response Team, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS and officers of the Nigeria Police Force from Alagbon Division.
LASEMA said the cause of the collapse has yet to be determined and will be investigated by relevant regulatory agencies.
Oke-Osanyintolu commiserated with the family of the deceased and wished the rescued victims a speedy recovery.
