Shillong, Oct 13: Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma on Tuesday said the Assembly cannot suspend an MLA and its role is limited to rearranging seats after taking note of party action, in response to VPP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit’s allegation over inaction against North Shillong legislator Adelbert Nongrum.
“No, suspension is not the prerogative of the Assembly Speaker. It is up to the political party or the legislature party to do whatever they like. It is their duty to inform us. We had taken note of it. We just have to allot separate seating, that’s all,” Sangma said.
On what the notification issued earlier meant, the Speaker added, “Notified means the sitting was rearranged, that’s all we can do.”
