Victoria Police have charged 43-year-old Brendan Nugent after he allegedly hit Independent MP Helen Haines with his car on Monday.
Mr Nugent faces three separate charges; dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and the Commonwealth offence of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official.
Police confirmed in a statement provided to The Nightly on Tuesday night they are alleging the attack was targeted and deliberate.
Mr Nugent remains in police custody and will appear in Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
Dr Haines suffered critical injuries to her lower body when Mr Nugent allegedly rammed the 65-year-old with a Toyota LandCruiser outside her electoral office in Wangaratta.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed that the accused had performed a U-turn to allegedly ram Dr Haines with his four-wheel-drive before then reversing “to do it a second time”.
The MP remains in a critical condition at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital after being airlifted there for emergency treatment.
On Tuesday it was confirmed Dr Haines had lost one leg after being pinned between two cars, while surgeons are working to urgently to save her remaining leg.
In a statement, Mr Nugent’s father Rod Nugent and Rod’s partner Christine Cunningham revealed Dr Haines was a friend of more than 20 years.
“Helen Haines is a deeply respected, valued and much loved member of our local community,” the statement issued on Tuesday read.
“Helen has been our friend for more than 20 years and what happened to her yesterday is devastating and unfathomable.
“All of our love and all of our thoughts are with Helen and her family and friends.
“We would like to sincerely thank members of the local community and police who came to Helen’s aid yesterday after the shocking and horrific crime. We will be assisting Victoria Police in any way we can.”
