The game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Jacksonville Jaguars in London got off to an unusual start. Barely 13 seconds had passed when Jeremiah Trotter Jr., a Philadelphia linebacker, and Bryan Thomas Jr., a Jacksonville defensive player, were ejected after getting into a fight at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
It all started with the opening kickoff. Josh Cameron returned the ball to the end zone, but Jacksonville’s touchdown was nullified due to penalties. Amid the confusion, the two players clashed, and the referees ultimately ejected them.
Trotter Lost a Key Player for the Eagles
The ejection was a setback for the Eagles, who entered the game with several players out and needed to regain ground after two consecutive losses. Trotter had emerged as a key player on defense following his performance against the Los Angeles Rams, a game in which he recorded 15 tackles, ten of them solo. In the first four games of the season, he had racked up 19 tackles and one pass deflection.
In Jacksonville, the player ejected was Bryan Thomas Jr., defensive end No. 57, not Brian Thomas Jr., the No. 7 wide receiver and one of the Jaguars’ key offensive weapons.
A Family Precedent for Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
The incident had a striking family precedent. Jeremiah Trotter, father of the Eagles’ linebacker, was also ejected before a game in 2005, while playing for Philadelphia. On that occasion, the veteran linebacker was involved in an altercation during warm-ups before a game against the Atlanta Falcons.
The incident that just occurred added even more tension to a game that was important for both teams. Jacksonville arrived in London with a 3-1 record, while Philadelphia arrived with a 2-2 record and coming off two consecutive losses. The game is part of Week 5 and is the first of two consecutive games the Jaguars will play in the United Kingdom.
More than two decades later, his son was at the center of a similar scene, though this time the incident occurred after the kickoff and with the game already underway. In London, the first play ended without a touchdown and with two players on their way to the locker room before the offenses could even run their first play.
