The Rajasthan government has suspended a station house officer, placed six police personnel under awaiting posting orders (APO) and removed two others from their posts following a review of law and order chaired by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on Tuesday. The action followed the killing of former BJP MLA Atar Singh Bhadana in Bharatpur district and allegations of misconduct against police personnel in separate incidents.
Weir Station House Officer Dhirendra Singh was suspended in connection with Bhadana’s death, while Additional Superintendent of Police Prerna Shekhawat and Bhusawar Circle Officer Neeraj Bhardwaj were placed under APO.
Bhadana died on Sunday after he and his associate, Gagan Sharma, were allegedly attacked with sticks and stones by a group of villagers at a stone crusher site in Bhonda village. Police said the confrontation stemmed from a dispute over attempts to restart the crusher.
Both men sustained serious injuries and were taken to a hospital in Weir. Bhadana was later referred to SMS Hospital in Jaipur, where he died during treatment.
DISPUTE OVER STONE CRUSHER
Villagers had accused Bhadana of encroaching on grazing land and engaging in illegal mining. The stone crusher had been closed for about a year, and efforts to reopen it had triggered tensions.
According to villagers, they had been protesting peacefully for 10 to 15 days against the proposed reopening. They alleged that Bhadana arrived at the site with 40 to 50 people and tried to remove them, leading to a confrontation. Both sides accused each other of assault.
At the review meeting, Sharma expressed displeasure over the incidents and directed senior police officials to take strict action against personnel found negligent or involved in misconduct. “The law is equal for everyone. No criminal, whoever he may be, will be spared under any circumstances,” he said.
ACTION AGAINST OTHER POLICE PERSONNEL
Among those placed under APO was Ajmer Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Anju Yadav, who had slapped an advocate during a dispute over car parking.
Sambhar Circle Officer Mukesh Joshi, Sri Ganganagar Circle Officer Vishnu Kumar Khatri and Jaipur Police Commissionerate Inspector Mukesh Kharadia were also placed under APO in separate matters.
Additional Superintendent of Police Brijmohan Meena, posted with the Special Investigation Unit for Crime Against Women in Jaipur Rural, and Khairthal Additional Superintendent of Police Jaya Singh were removed from their posts.
CM SEEKS STRICTER MONITORING
Sharma directed the police to prepare district-wise lists of mining and land disputes and formulate plans to resolve them. He also called for strict action against mafias and stronger monitoring to prevent misconduct by police personnel.
He warned that the actions of a few officers could damage the image and credibility of the entire police force, stressing the need for greater accountability.
The chief minister also directed the police to ensure law and order during the upcoming festive season, improve traffic management and intervene promptly in minor disputes to prevent them from escalating.
He asked officials to ensure that Kalika patrolling units tasked with women's safety function effectively and regularly interact with students in schools and colleges.
The meeting was attended by Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary for Home Bhaskar A Sawant and other senior officials.
