Amazon plans to invest more than €16 billion ($18 billion) in Germany in 2027, expanding its cloud computing, AI, logistics, satellite internet, and TV production businesses.
The company announced the investment today at the Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin. The two-day event, hosted by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, aims to attract investment to the country. Yesterday’s announcements included a new AI partnership between Germany and Nvidia.
The biggest part of Amazon’s plan is €4.8 billion for Amazon Web Services (AWS), its cloud computing business. The money will go towards expanding its data centre region around Frankfurt, which has been operating since 2014.
Amazon is also opening a second robotics and AI research lab in Berlin, doubling its research presence in the city, but it has not disclosed the cost of the new facility.
The company is investing in its delivery network, too. Six warehouses, including those in Bad Hersfeld and Dortmund, will be upgraded, with work continuing into 2028.
A new fulfilment centre in Zweibrücken is due to open this year, while another is under construction in Könnern. Amazon says these logistics projects will create more than 3,000 jobs.
The investment also extends beyond cloud computing and deliveries. Amazon has booked 24 rocket launches with European provider Arianespace for Amazon Leo, its satellite internet network. Meanwhile, Prime Video has more than 15 German productions planned through 2027.
The new commitment adds to the more than €100 billion Amazon says it has invested in Germany since 2010. The company employs more than 40,000 people in the country, including 3,000 at AWS. In June 2024, Amazon announced a separate €10 billion investment plan, most of which was earmarked for cloud infrastructure.
“Germany is a hub of innovation and one of the most attractive investment opportunities in Europe,” said David Zapolsky, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer.
Germany’s economy minister, Katherina Reiche, described the investment as a sign of confidence in the country’s future as a business location.
