SHILLONG, Oct 22: Dr Homiwell Memorial Secondary School, Mawklot, kicked off its silver jubilee celebrations on Wednesday, marking 25 years of service, with founder Rev EH Kharkongor calling on students to use knowledge to uplift society.
The celebrations began with the hoisting of the silver jubilee flag by Rev Kharkongor, who urged the school community to work towards raising the institution’s standing and expanding its services.
Recalling the institution’s early years, headmistress Renuka Kharkongor said the school was inaugurated in 2001 by the late Rain Augustine Lyngdoh, who was then Meghalaya’s minister in charge of Primary Education.
From an initial enrolment of 42 students and two teachers in KG-I and KG-II, the school has grown to accommodate nearly 300 students. She also noted its record of a 100 per cent pass rate in recent Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations conducted by the state board.
Explaining the vision behind the school, Rev Kharkongor said his eight years as principal of John Roberts Theological Seminary in Mawklot inspired him to contribute to local development. Supported by his late wife, village leaders, and local mothers, he helped establish the institution. He said the school was named after Dr Homiwell Lyngdoh, an illustrious figure from Mawklot, to honour his legacy and introduce younger generations to his contributions.
Referring to the school’s motto, “Knowledge Is Power”, Rev Kharkongor said the pursuit of education should lead to wisdom and be used to uplift others rather than oppress them.
Guest of honour and former Mawhati MDC Teilinia Thangkhiew encouraged students to follow the example of Mother Teresa, noting that individual acts of kindness create a positive ripple effect throughout society.
Chief guest Hamletson Dohling, adviser to the Meghalaya Chief Minister and former legislator, commended the founders and staff for sustaining the school and pledged continued support. Dohling also underscored the need to promote indigenous figures such as Dr Homiwell Lyngdoh, urging educational institutions to familiarise youth with the sacrifices and public service of earlier generations.
School chairman and Mawklot village headman Mawkordor Nongneng thanked attendees and appealed to parents and well-wishers for ongoing support.
Alumnus and commerce lecturer Ricky Nelson Nongdhar recalled his years from nursery to matriculation at the school, remembering the care and discipline of the late Madam Kharkongor, the first headteacher. He urged students to work hard, respect their teachers, and grow into responsible citizens.
The programme was attended by the grandson and great-grandson of Dr Homiwell Lyngdoh, daughters of the late Elder Maurice G Lyngdoh, founding members, former teachers, alumni, and local residents.
Students presented musical and dance performances during the event. The silver jubilee celebrations will conclude on December 29.
