Penang hopes festival visitors will extend stays and explore local attractions
GEORGE TOWN: The sight of bustling vegetarian food stalls, the aroma of traditional meat-free delicacies and the devotion of worshippers are adding a festive flavour to Penang as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival and Navarathiri coincide this week.
The Nine Emperor Gods Festival, observed by the Chinese community from Oct 10 to 18, and Navarathiri, celebrated by Hindus from Oct 11 to 20, are bringing the state’s multicultural heritage and vibrant food scene into focus.
For devotees, both festivals are deeply rooted in faith, prayer and spiritual discipline, with vegetarianism serving as a common practice as many followers abstain from meat during the festive period.
They also welcomed the overlap between the two festivals, saying it highlighted the importance of vegetarianism in their religious traditions while making it easier for visitors to enjoy a wide variety of meat-free food in Penang.
Private school teacher Chiang Lee Sian, 29, said the Nine Emperor Gods Festival was an important occasion for the Chinese community, with vegetarianism being a key part of the observance for many devotees.
“The festival is important to the Chinese community, and we are vegetarians during this period. It is very easy to find vegetarian food in Penang, with so many choices available,” she told Bernama in Madras Lane today.
Housewife Meenashaki Thuraisingam, 46, who travelled from Kuala Lumpur, said she was delighted to see the two festivals falling in the same week this year, bringing more vegetarian food stalls into the spotlight.
“Every year, Navarathiri and the Nine Emperor Gods Festival usually fall around the same time, but this year they coincide in the same week. I am from Kuala Lumpur, and I find the variety of vegetarian food in Penang particularly appealing,” she said.
During the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, vegetarian food stalls and temporary food fairs offer an assortment of meat-free dishes, including vegetarian rice meals, mock-meat creations and traditional Chinese vegetarian delicacies.
Meanwhile, State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the overlapping celebrations demonstrated how the state’s multicultural identity continued to thrive through its people, traditions and religious practices.
He said these traditions reflected Penang’s distinctive food culture, where Chinese and Indian culinary influences had helped establish a diverse range of vegetarian dining options.
“Penang’s vegetarian food deserves to be recognised as more than a dietary choice. It is a culinary heritage. In fact, Penang is a vegetarian-friendly city with many vegetarian outlets.”
Wong also noted that the festivals presented opportunities for a wide range of businesses, including vegetarian restaurants, hawkers, food vendors, cafés, hotels, retailers and tourism operators.
He said the wider tourism opportunity lay in encouraging visitors to turn a temple visit into a more complete Penang experience by enjoying local food, exploring heritage streets, shopping at local businesses and extending their stay.
The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is a nine-day Taoist celebration to welcome the nine celestial deities, purify the mind and body, and pray for health, longevity and protection from disasters. The festival is observed at temples across the state, including Tow Boo Kong Temple in Butterworth and temples on Penang Island.
Navarathiri, meaning “nine nights”, is dedicated to the worship of the divine feminine energy, particularly Goddess Durga and her nine manifestations, and commemorates the triumph of good over evil.
The historic Sri Maha Mariamman Temple on Queen Street here serves as a focal point for Navarathiri prayers in Penang.
